Latest Update: Line Art or Model: Church_father_and_bride_poses

I had a vague idea couple of months ago about Cupid comes down to a small village on a Valentines Day, and shoots love arrows to the crowd irresponsibly. I spent a week after the announce of the challenge fixing the idea so it suits the topic. Here is the concept of the idea.
Once I firmed the idea, I started look into the art style. This time, I want to have my characters and environment to be even more cartoony than my Little Run-away Prince.
I took the characters from Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride as my reference. I bought the DVD and watched 6 times to catch the feeling of the characters, expressions, outfits and environment.
This time i will have 7-8 human characters and 3-4 animals. 2 month for all organic models, 1 month for environment, and the final month for compositing. The schedule is tight. I’d better hurry up.
basically, 5 to 6 days per character.
day 1 - day 2: mesh + refine + UV + rig + pose
day 3 - day 4: zbrush/mudbox sculpting
day 5 - day 6: texturing + render test
Here comes my day 1 progress of my first character, took me about 4 hours. Pretty much just like Victor from Corpse Bride.
Great start. The model looks really nice. ![]()
Reminds me of Victor Van Dort from Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
To Davee: Thanks for coming and glad your like the idea.
To Shouroujin: Thanks for the support buddy.
To Michael: It’s been a while my friend! I’ve been waiting for this challenge and hoping the topic suits my taste and here it is, a perfect one for me. let’s see who can win this time
To Russel and Darksuit: Yes, I used victor from corpse bride as my reference. Glad you can tell.
It’s a good concept with lots of opportunities for some great comedy (people indiscriminantly kissing inanimate objects/animals…etc).
As for your character, it’s very clear you’ve used the Corpse Bride for your reference (as you’ve said)… But at the moment I’d say it’s too close to the source material. His proportions & clothes are all so similar that when I saw your thumbnail I immediately thought “That’s from the Corpse Bride!”.

Maybe if you adjusted some of his proportions/scale it would distance him from the original?
Clearly you’ve got a host of characters to model for the final image, so it might not be that prominent… But it would be a shame if you put all the work into your piece, only to end up with an array of characters that remind people of something else.
héhé, cool idea, but IMO it’s more funny then strange
Sounds like you have well plan all your schedule for this challenge.
Looking forward to see your progress on it.
Have fun Jack adn good luck ![]()
i think this will be a fun and attractive project just by reading the concept and seeing the first character.
shifu~haven’t seen ur artwork for couple months, this project truly makes me feel so excited and refreshing~i will always come by and see the progress. : )
GOOD LUCK on this competition~:3
To Jedir and Sweet_bee: Thank you for your comments and encourage. Glad you like it so far, even there’s not much done yet
To AJ:
I’d like to take that as compliment. :P. AJ, I truely agree with you that completely reproduce someone else’s work/design will lead me into many problems. For example the reference for my Cupid is Hot Stuff the Little Red Devil. the proportion of LRD and Tim Burton don’t easily match each other. On the other hand I don’t want all my characters looks like Victor, Victoria, Barkis etc either. At least I can change the coat to a real groom outfit, and remove the fainting white on his face and make it warmer and less Corpse-Bride-like. I will be dealing with those tonight.
To collings and dobermunk: In fact i only expressed half of my idea. While most of people are making a single strange behavior, I decide to make a chain reaction. Which means, a strange behavior causes another set of strange behaviors. I believe the two layers onion is better than just one. Also in terms of the meaning of the image, I decide not to just make it funny or strange. The instruction mentioned “laugh and think”, and that’s what i’m trying to focus on. My goal is to make the view laugh for the first 2 minutes, then think for the next 5. Let’s see how well I can get that part done.
a quick shading test just to see if I’m on the right track. working on unwraping. should be done tonight so i can start to rig him tomorrow.
I have to reply in agreement to AJ, about the likeness being too close. I hope you consider changing the designs further.
The work itself is great! There are just too many other ways in which you can take your idea, and to be so close to Corpse Bride might hurt you in the judging. I hope you do well, so this isn’t negative criticism.
Thank AJ and StuntMan for the push, I decide to change the design of the character so he/they will be less Corpse Bride alike. Here’s the new head. working on the dress as well.
amazing model work!:applause: very stylistic and personal!
love it all the way!
also … pretty remarkable that ur model was a cool match to the original character … ur eye for details really paid off! :buttrock:
but still … better yet … i like this one more than ever! good work mate!
cheers!
