Latest Update: Concept Sketch or 3D pre-visualization: color palette / composition

Creature concept. The idea is to position three of these creatures to create some sort of freak birthday party.

A colored concept of the final image will follow, but it will probably be a few weeks from now due to deadlines and time-consuming things like that. Meanwhile, let me know what you think!

#3

composition layout. Next step: modeling the creature.

#4

Doing some colorsketches first to decide and lay down the color palette.

I really like the little sketch of the monster with the brick. Strange indeed!

Thanks wildsheepchase, although it’s not a brick, it’s actually a slice of gingerbread (a typically Dutch childsparty game I think; trying to take a bite from a hanging slice while blindfolded). But perhaps a brick would make it more ‘out of this world’…

Maybe the image should contain at first glance ‘earthy’ birthdayparty situations, but with an unearthy approach. Suggestions are welcome!

Ha! Sorry, I’m not familiar with the game…sounds like a great idea, though.
I like the idea of taking the child’s birthday games and putting an alien twist on them. Maybe you ditch the gingerbread and put an alien plant or creature there instead.
Also, you could put humans around at the party looking shocked or surprised. Just throwing out some ideas.
I like the view with his mouth open. It has a lot of character.
Good luck!

Placement of elements in the image and a quick color laydown. Let me know what you think!

I like your picture for its disconnected bizareness. I agree that maybe you can play more with the birthday party rituals to make it wierder. I thought it was a brick too - so maybe a brick would be good

It is hard to see that the monster on the right is blinfolded. Perhaps you could make the blindfold a colour that will stand out more, and give it a bit more volume and maybe a little knot at the back?

What will the theme of the cake be?

Thanks for your comment, Ordibble P. Lop.

However I think I’m gonna have to make the decision if I want
a) weird freaks on a weird party - every action or party element has an “alien” twist.
b) weird freaks on a “normal”, cute party - every action or party element has a “happy” theme.

With option (a), the disadvantage (concept-wise) would be that there’s nothing ‘strange’ in weird creatures having a weird party. Perhaps it’s weird that they have a party at all, but if they WOULD have a party, the weird games would actually be quite predictable behaviour.

So I think I’m gonna go for option (b) and emphasize the contrast between weird/horrorlike creatures and an extremely happy decoration, smiley faces and sweet stuff on the cake. Especially this contrast should evoke a disturbing feeling when watching it.

(In short, that means that I will choose to go for gingerbread instead of a brick  …or maybe an apple, if that’s more recognizable as a game outside the Netherlands)
