Story Editory Pose Issues - help please

#1

Why is the pose I set at the end of a clip not matching up perfectly with the original pose that I pasted (from the beginning of the animation)? It’s mostly matching up, but has slight differences in it when i create the loop/cycle. It seems like the pose is working, but there is a rotation in the hips, or sometimes it seems the legs are bent a bit (prob from floor contact pushing up in response to slight difference in the hip position). I’ve tried various settings and am trying all sorts of stuff, but I’m not making any progress.

I’ve been using Motionbuilder in production since Filmbox 2.0, but I’m a total noob again with the story editor. By time the story editor came out, I had already moved on to a different position and haven’t looped/blended in a few years. Help!

I’ve looked at the tutorials and read what I could, but I can’t figure out why my poses aren’t matching up still. I figure there is a magic check box, a slider, or a button somewhere that I should have or shouldn’t have pressed that is causing the wackiness. What could be a common cause of this - besides my rust/noobness?

Thanks for the help

A few things to check …

make sure your pose paste options are set to not match rotation.
Pose paste is selection dependant for match so make sure your pasting on the same selection as you did the first time.

Also make sure that your clip is long enough to allow the pose to be on a full frame if you paste it at the end of a clip it sometimes does not expand the clip length enough and it lands on a subframe.

the fast way to check is drop a marker on to the character rig hips ctrl and then move it by hand to where the pose should be and make sure that the marker and the pasted pose ctrl set matches up.

hope that helps, Story can be a bit trickey some times… if all else fails bake it back out to the timeline, past the pose in the main scene and then put it back in to the story clip for loop checking… actualy I would do that normaly and not do much in story.

Good luck,
Brad

Cool thanks!

I knew it was something simple and noobish on my part.

I had only turned off the T&R matching in the Pose controls, but didn’t touch them in the match menu in the Story options.

It works as it’s supposed to.

I have another question concerning the Story and Looping in general:
Is there a magic button somewhere that will match the curve tangents between the start and end of the loop? I hate seeing any sort of speed/acceleration change in the limbs when the loop goes back to the beginning.

What I’ve always done in the past is to cut out the 20+ frames or so before the last frame, then copy the first 20 frames in the beginning, and paste them on the end. This makes the tangents match up pretty close, and smooths the loop out pretty well and is quick and dirty. Either that, or copy the tangent numbers from the beginning and paste them at the end, which is an exact match, but obviously time-consuming. I don’t have a problem doing this, but I feel like it’s too old-school and there must be a magic button that will do it for me when processing a loop in the story.

I have printed out everything from online help concerning the story editor, and will take it home and read it this weekend, but hopefully I can get that info here.

I also need to learn how to blend different body parts at different speeds. I know that can’t be complicated, and isn’t too big of a deal right now, but that’s the next skill I’m going to tackle. I am just touching the surface with the story right now, but I really want to get fully up to speed before things get too hectic for me around here.

Thanks for all the help.
