Stereocipic active & passive

#1

Hello everyone.

Let me explain my problem.

The limited company in which I work has just invest in a passive stereoscopic 3D screen. (Samsung Series 7)

So I did a test 3D animation from 3ds with two camera Removed from 4 ° with the same focal point.
Then I make my compositing (identical for both footages) in nuke, do a quick test for anaglyph see if it works properly, the effect is satisfactory, at least for the anaglyph.

So, I took my two sequences, left and right, make an avi uncompressed each (the two sequences are 50fps for info).

But the problem is that now I do not know too much manipulation to follow.

If you know the steps to follow to compile it, what app, the output options, the requirements for burning Blu-ray … finally all the steps I’m missing to get there I’d be very grateful.

And at the same time, if you know the manipulation for the active stereoscopy, I am sold.

Thank you all.

Kind of in the same boat here. Earlier in production though. We’re still picking the right tools for the job so I would appreciate any good advice on the matter.

Not to high-jack the topic, but we really need a sticky or something for stereo information. I’ll follow this one and post my findings here to help the others too, if a sticky appears I’ll edit it later.

Also BreizhoO what did you use in the production process ? I’m leaning towards Nuke and Ocula ( a plug-in for Nuke for those who don’t know it ) for compositing at the moment.

The reason no one is answering is because we dont know the question. It is all very vague about what you two want to know.

Btw good idea about a stereo sticky. I’ll get one up and compile a bunch of info for it.

Well, the initial topics I was interested in were:

  1. the camera rig that needs to be built inside the 3d app
  2. the rendering required for comp
  3. the compositing workflow itself
  4. the previewing options or ways for the stereo to be viewed in-house or shown to clients
  5. the final outout format for the different types of stereo theaters.

Or to better sum it up I am currently researching the ways to build a stereo pipeline for our studio, which includes both software and hardware needed for stereo ( as it turned out Dolby 3D ) production.
Most of the stuff I managed to find some info on myself, but some additional input from people with production experience with this would be most appreciated.

If a sticky comes up I’ll try to contribute to it as much as I can. Thanks, beaker and sorry for being so vague at first, I had little to no idea at the start to what exactly stereo work required.

Acutally, I found all the answers I was looking set aside the last step.
Camera rig is ok for now, we are Waiting for the vray 2 update at work.
All the compositing is ok too.
video format. mp4 is ok too, it’s missing is the burning blu ray procedure.

I used nuke, FirstLight for testing, everything seem to be ok.

Any special hardware (3dtv or something) ? Or just anaglyph preview ?

#7

Anaglyph preview while compositing, and 3D TV then.

#8

Did you use Nuke and Ocula or just some good old AfterFX ? Or maybe something else ?

#9

Nuke only, occula was not needy on this.

Those questions went from vague to way too broad. The answers to all of those are “it depends”. Depends on the software(3d and 2d), depends on what your output format is , depends on how much money you have, depends on the theater or the cable station.

I’ll put up some general information but you can get 90% of this with a simple searching the forums or google search.

Some info I found with info here how to prepare for blu-ray. Hope it helps, BreizhoO.

Beaker, sorry about the mess, but I’m just starting to get my head around this stereo stuff. I did search the forums and google, but the info there is contradicting itself from time to time depending on the source. And there are so many workflows that I kinda got lost.

Just for the record 3d soft is Max, 2d is either AfterFX or Nuke ( one of the choices we have to make ). And the budget is really low, so one of the decisions is about the hardware required for previewing and showing stuff to clients. Output format turns out will be Dolby 3D and possibly Blu-ray for future projects.

To complement your questions: I am using Maya - Machstudio pro which in my case can output full HD 2048 x 1080 pixels images in exr format or png or jpg or whatever format you need to compile the 3d video be it anaglyph or polarized. If anaglyph i use the output directly from machstudio pro and if is for left and right eye to be composed in nuke or afterfx or whatever program you want to use.

But that is not the hardest part, i would say this is the easy one. But when it have to see with digital cinema format to be used for Dolby or doremi servers used in teathers that is a different question because you have to have a converter for the images in jpg2k and ciexyz color space for the images and for the sound dolby and this have to be wrapped in mxf format that only those servers can read.

For these you can use one of the best app i have seen which is Cine-asset 4.4.2 from doremi (4k in price) or if you want to develope one from your own you need to get the framework from opencinematool.
