The legend featured in my submission will be the calamitous battle waged by the devil against his maker. As the story goes it ended badly for him, but I can’t help but wonder how the tide might have turned in his favour had he employed the power of steam.

I chose this legend for being ideally suited to include steam power (presumably heated ‘elements’ are the devil’s strong suit), as well as for embodying the most preposterous power differential that one could dream to conquer with such anachronistic methods.

In these sketches the devil rides atop a pneumatic battle-bot, mano a mano, but I’m considering throwing in a few minions later on, to help operate the leviathan. I don’t want the devil too small though, so I’ll see what’s feasible.

Clearly the idea needs a lot of work, and I’ll admit now that publishing such a rough sketch is mortally embarrassing. The only reason I do is because the contest calls for a progression of work, and I’d be cheating to hide my starting point. I look forward to the community’s thoughts and opinions.

I've been away for some time, so an update was overdue.

I've decided to take my concept into the skies, although I wonder whether wings are the way to go - it seems "cramped" in a portraid layout. I also think it's not entirely clear yet how the machine is being operated.

I’ll have more time to flesh it out after the weekend, and maybe try a landscape layout. In the meantime, comments or criticisms about my choice of colours, design or composition would be appreciated.
