Hello,

My entry will be the matte painting of the city of Syracuse.

Our team will do the video of the “Siege of Saracuse” and here I will post the WIP and final piece of the matte painting that will open our video entry.

"Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa, Sicilian: Sarausa, Classical Greek: Συρακοῦσαι / transliterated: Syrakousai) is a historic city in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Syracuse. The city is noted for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture and association to Archimedes, playing an important role in ancient times as one of the top powers of the Mediterranean world; it is over 2,700 years old. Syracuse is located in the south-east corner of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Syracuse next to the Ionian Sea.

The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and became a very powerful city-state. Syracuse was allied with Sparta and Corinth, exerting influence over the entire Magna Grecia area of which it was the most important city. Once described by Cicero as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”, it later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire."

"Despite diplomatic attempts, war broke out between the Roman Republic and the Kingdom of Syracuse in 214 BC, while the Romans were still busy battling with Carthage at the height of the Second Punic War.

A Roman force led by the General Marcus Claudius Marcellus consequently laid siege to the port city by sea and land. The city of Syracuse, located on the eastern coast of Sicily was reknowned for it’s significant fortifications, great walls that protected the city from attack and among the Syracuse defenders was the mathematician and scientist Archimedes

“…, Archimedes’ devised defensive devices to counter the Roman efforts including a huge crane (see the Claw of Archimedes) operated hook that was used to lift the enemy ships out of the sea before dropping them to their doom. He also created a giant mirror (see Heat ray) that was used to deflect the powerful mediterranean sun onto the ships sails, setting fire to them. These measures, along with the fire from ballistas and onagers mounted on the city walls, frustrated the Romans and forced them to attempt costly direct assaults.”

concept:

The idea of this matte painting is to create an amazing fortified city built into the cliffs (we created the cliffs to justify the coming of the flying ships). It will be an aerial frontal view of the city showing great walls, towers, observatory, weapons, huge mirror and some bridges all of them built to match the rocky terrain and the waterfalls.

Good challenge to everyone!!
