Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Theo Chronis
Hello people!! Good luck everybody. At last I found some time to scribble some concept sketches for this challenge. My picture is going to be about Jason and the Argonauts (I am Greek after all) and especially about their meeting with Talos, the giant guardian of the island of Crete. According to legend he was a giant man whose body was made of copper or bronze, thus making him one of the first robots ever!! He was a gift to king Minos of Crete by the god Hephaestus, who created him with the help of the cyclopes. Talos had one vein, which went from his neck to his ankle, bound shut by only one bronze nail. His job was to keep intruders away from the island and when he saw Argo (the Argonauts’ ship) he started throwing huge rocks at it. He was overcome, when Medea (Jason’s bride and a great sorceress, by the way) cast a sleeping spell on him, or drove him mad and he hit his ankle on a pointed rock and thus removed the nail that kept all his blood inside.
Ok, today I did a couple of concept sketches and tried to bring all that story closer to a steampunk and fin-de-siecle style. Also I want to change it a little bit and give poor Jason some part in it too.
So this is my second concept sketch. As you can see in both pictures I have made Argo a flying ship, something between an ancient Greek warship, a zeppelin and a propeller aircraft.I like both images so far so I need some help from you guys. What do you think?
They both look great for composistions. Love the angles. The most recent one may be easier to do, since there is a lot of water involved in the airship one.
Womball: well rendering water does not concern me so much as that in the airship concept there isn’t so much action going on… I think it needs something more…
It seems to me that posting after midnight isn’t the best way to get some feedback! LoL. Come on people TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK of the 2 compos. Which do you prefer? the argonauts and Talos is the subject!!!
I decided I had to make some brushes in Photoshop to start the wip, so I made some landscape brushes and had some fun. I don’t know if I’m going to keep this for the entry but I wanted to share it. Seeing this landscape I am rethinking my topic. Instead of Jason and the Argonauts escaping Talos, I’m thinking about painting Perseus rescuing Andromeda. It’s a very similar picture actually… I’ll be back with another pre-viz soon
Mate i like both ideas a lot …
why don’t you try to connect both of the two themes to one
meaning the action of the flying boat to the giant togeather with the sleaping giant…
popo malakies pou grafo gia na leme pos grafoume kati etsi…
Yours Raul
Here is a sample of the brushes I 'm going to use. Maybe I’ll make some more if I need them…
Wildcory1: for the entire last concept pic I just used the top left brush. I really like that one cause it has a very painterly feel, almost like oil painting, with which I am very familiar, being a painter and all.
I’ll be posting a wip soon. thanks for viewing people!!
So I worked a little bit on the shield and lighting. The main idea is that medusa will be reflected on the shield. I don’t like the position of Perseus’ head, and also he is a little bit too bulky. Tell me what you think.
I think this gives a much better idea of what I want to do. The image of medussa will be reflected in the shield…
hey !
nice to see an other try on the “perseus vs medusa” theme.
on this point i wonder where the point of interest is supposed to be.
the sword ? perseus ? the reflection (can´t see medusa!) ?
decide and try to show it with interesting contrasts.
and we need some steampunk, i think.
good luck!
