Latest Update: Work In Progress: WIP - Siren Symphony - Ship Progress

#2

This piece is based on the Greek Mythological encounter between Odysseus and the Sirens. This version depicts a tour aboard a sea vessel powered by steam. The steam also powers a powerful pipe organ played by an intense conductor and orchestra. When the Sirens arrive to seduce the tour passengers with their song, the pipe organ drowns out their effect, thus allowing the tourists safe passage away from the jagged coastal rocks while observing these creatures up close.

I’ve begun the painting process here. I am starting with the background and working my way up as I do the basic block-in. In regards to the lighting, I am leaning towards a late afternoon or sunset conditions.

Great choice on lightning…looking fwd for more work buddy!

I am working up a simple 3d block-in to achieve the basic perspective for the ship, steam engine, pipe organ as well as the lighting and shadows. The rest will be painted up in Photoshop.

I am in the process of blocking in the sea. I hope to add in details to the waves to make it look much more realistic and appealing. I will most likely progress to the background sky and the distant cliffs before working on the foreground objects.

Hi, great idea! the image seems to me a little bit off center, the focal point being a lot on the right … don’t know what you think about it.

Hello Epsilorn, that is a great point. I will keep that in mind and make sure that the focal point will remain at a balanced point on the composition. Thanks for your feedback, it’s much appreciated!

Here is a progress on the ship model that I am planning to use for a paintover on the final. I am hoping to flush out the design a bit more. The giant pipe organ is the next big thing to tackle and with only a week left, it’s time to really kick this into high gear.
