Latest Update: Concept / pre-visualization: Beast try sketch

Yeah, thought about making an african myth, but for some reason came across Thor with Jörmungandr during Ragnarök, and thought, hey, thats a nice idea. So I’m thinking Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, be some kind of electric gun, (no duh) and the best place to get juice for that puppy would be a storm. Jörmungandr can be some mechanical monstrocity that needs tending to. Imagine Norse mythos meets Nikola Tesla.
sketch of the serpent, and where I’m thinking of going with it. I really need to sit down and draw something more substantial.
Thinking of making Thor’s equipment with less flair than the serpent, hopefully making a definite difference in style between his technology and that of the serpent.
i like the idea of your sketch. but just a thought… maybe to enhance the difference between new school tech of thor and the old of the serpants, maybe have thor using futuristic parts. and show the serpant with more of gears/rust/etc showing? just a thought… good luck to you :]
Yeah, that’s the thing, I already thought about that, and I don’t want to go too far off with the steampunk idea. Thor’s equipment is already using electricity, (I’ll sketch his backpack and belt and helmet today) but maybe I should add more gears into the serpent, alongside with fantasy styled…flair. Okay, I just can’t think of a good word to describe it. Think elves of LotR and Hellboy 2.
Industrial versus clockwork fantasy I guess is the best way to describe it. But it’ll be hella difficult showing off a clockwork machine that’ll be mainly gigantic and far off. Think I’ll just have to add uber sized cogs and gears sticking out at some places.
btw, thanks for actually watching my entry
well, i’m just throwing an idea out there… but for the serpent, you could show the underbelly off (like, show the gear works etc) since on snakes, the underside is the softer side, if you will. the back/upper side would have cover showing its scales… just throwing some comments that might?.. hopefully you might see something that would enhance your piece?
:hmm: clearly I wasn’t the first one to think up Thor and the serpent. sigh Per Trystad already had the idea way long before I joined. And it’s looking good too. Maybe I should try for another idea
Right, while I’m thinking of doing another topic for the challenge, I’ll keep on working on this one. Here we have a little bit more fleshed out of what I was thinking for the serpent. Yes, I know I said I’ll be doing Thor’s backpack today, but I got sidetracked.
Okay, scrapping the thor idea, so am thinking of going for more fairy tale kind of idea. Here’s one of the ideas.
Okay, so yesterday I chatted with friends and I suddenly got it, Beauty and the Beast. Great fable, perfect to be steampunked, and I don’t think too many people took that idea. I didn’t even make a sketch, I just grabbed as many bits and pieces of pictures I could find and mashed them together, even quickly bringing up 3DSMax and posed a biped. Biped’s are great to get a quick figure. Anyhow, so here’s the plan, steampunk beast, Victorian age, and make the picture like a portrait.
Hello Steyn. Funny how alike we was thinking about the Thor concept.
The beuty and beast consept might work fine I think. You just have to come up with an original enterpritation of the steampunk beast there.
Looking forward to seeing more!:arteest:
yup yup, still going to base him on an animal, but keeping away from the overused disney wildebeast / lion look. Busy sketching his design in my notebook at the moment too.
and yeah, like the saying goes, great minds think alike…then again the example they give in the Steampunk Competition introduction and instructions was Thor.
¬_¬
ahaha, i enjoyed the thor one… but beauty and the beast would also work fairly well. hope to see some sketches of beast soon.
sketched this up today in my notebook, I gotta tell you, I am NOT someone for robotics, if this thing gets put together in some victorian lab, the only thing it would achive is one kick ass looking alarm clock.
Just an fyi, this will probably not be the final version of him, I might change his facial/cranial features when doing the 3D
That’s a great looking beast. I like the use of asymmetry in the torso too. Your robotics look fine too - keep up the cool work ![]()
Been away on holiday at my parent’s place, took my pc along to work on the project for three weeks while there. And then my power supply broke on day four while there. No frikken way I can finish this for the deadline obviously, so just pulling out of this comp.
