Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: steven bateman

Very nice gear designs. Bike chains look like they would be hard to model, but very impressive looking. That interface looks extremely similar to blender’s. Even the layout is similar, but it looks modded.

#22

Thanks Womble, i’ts just the normal blender with the icons and colours changed.
Here’s my evenings progress, still looks nothing like a spider everything should be functional.

#23

Began to work on the leg linkages

#24

Kool mechanics H! You are pulling our leg abut the spinny thingy right, we know you know they call that a speed governor. The whatcha-ma-callit has me stumped though.

#25

Thanks Soapy, i knew what it was for but i couldn’t remember the name, here’s a little update.

#26

For those that are interested here’s where i got my inspiration from, the principle is the same for forward movement, i’ve just adapted things to work for steam.

#27

Ah, I can see it starting to come together now.

You and Mark put too much thought into your designs. LOL!

#28

I didn’t really get where you were going with this thing until now. I missed the Arachnea mention. But cool beans, this one is gonna be funky!

#29

Started to work on the venom delivery system that will work of a hair trigger, just need to work out the mechanics of it.

#30

Oh, that’s a really cool spiderthingy. Also looks like the mechanics should work in some way. Nice designs!

#31

Here’s a quick thumbnail of my concept which mainly revolves around the use of shadows cast by the mechanical spider rather than focusing on the spider itself. I’m going for a long, stretched out format. Thanks for looking.

#32

Miketche Thanks it’s the mechanical side of things that interested me in this challenge, along with wanting to learn some hardsurface modeling tecniques, no subd’s used so far, which had kind of opened my eyes in a way.

Soapy Yup Arachne is my concept, although i’ll be going for a very quiet hopefully atmospheric rendition of her, kind of the silent assasin

Gunilla Glad you like my spiderthingy, i spent quite a while researching the mechanics for her, it was the fun part for me.

#33

awesome stuff!

i really like the render, what did you use for rendering?

#34

Jeepster Thanks, glad you like it, the renderer is blender internal. The lighiting is just an angle map, mapped to the horizon, for the materials i used this tutorial as a starting point

Its a very simple set up realy, the hdri light probe (angle map) is Grace Cathedral that i got from here

Hope that helps

#35

I like your artistic take on the composition. Hopefully the shadow silhouette is strong enough to translate well.

#36

sweet, thanks for the help!

#37

Wow! I missed a bunch of updates here! Fantastic work, Steve. I love the mechanical designs and the scary look of functionality about the spider. The details just scream steampunk, in the best possible way. Bravo!

#38

Nice work on the steampunk spider it looks fabulous! Spooky shadows sounds like a kool idea. Bring it!

#39

Added some swirly bits on the main cogs, i’m also changeing the legs to something more simple, probably just brass tapered curved rods.

#40

THis is really turning out great. I really like the detail in the big gears. HOw did you make the bike chain? Are the links instanced over a curve?
