backlight definetely a good idea to get a better volume, and i also feel the smoke is too much, i like better when i still see the floor a little bit. and i think the smoke bellow the elbow is not necessary/reduce.sorry probably i tell you too much.

irawan, no no! this is great, thx!!..
i will tryout every hint i get, can only help me learn, try to understand the different impression the picture is giving, and also improve the things which don’t look right or may look better…
gimme more
edit: what i like for my point of view, or find it nice to have is that the giant peels itself out of the darkness… which would be gone with a backlight… well maybe he can also peel out of the light… hmm
less fogg, and hidden “beam” … perhaps its just to much… now it feels, there’s much unused space, unfilled
perhaps add some steal girder stuff?
I think i will let go for today… 9 hours of messing around
Tried to look at the picture like i would retouch some photography and tried to overlay, darken, highlight stuff to get more depth…
tomorrow i’ll do the rests of the ornaments and improve more …hopefully…
hey syrez
great pic so far..
i think what you call "flat" is the lack of different materials.. it currently looks like its all done from one material.. metal doesnt look like metal... even brushed metal has stronger highlight..
secondly i think it would help the whole drama alot when odin was smaller.. for my taste he is too big ..
hope you dont mind the 3 min overpaint i did to show what i mean..

ray: no i surely don’t mind, cause it clearly points out what you mean and you’re right. At work i always have to retouch product photos with rendered 3d bath fittings in chrome. So i will consider this and try out my experience from that chrome, and try to port it on metal :p. Harder Highlights perhaps after I’ve done the ornaments, i push that.
Also i will make an alternative with a smaller Odin… but already feel that Odins presence in the pic is really lush (so left him taller)… Well, as you said in your thread, bad feelings, but work improves as we do… and after the next 10 pictures we would do it very different i think, hehe
mrpeace: big thx, i’m flattered
Heya, long time no update.
Pushed the resolution of the image, added lots of detail stuff, which is not seen in lowres… learned alot. But to change the overall impression its prolly to late… too much is wrong, with colors and composition, that i could change it with minor steps 'till monday.
Thanks alot to Alex Broeckel (check out his awesome Octo image :)), who’s supported me with alot of hints and tips, i wouldn’t have pushed it thus far without him. Anyway, for the first painting i’m a little proud, but also sick of it, cause i know lots about what could be better

The well of Knowledge and the search for Wisdom
Wars had been fought for the nine giant steam engines that drove the nine great cities since men could remember. The machines were built long before any men walked upon the worlds and almost forgotten are the old secrets, the gods and titans, who still watch upon earth and guide few, that still know of there existence.
Knowledge is power these people say.
Power is steam the lords tell.
Of all the gods, Odin was one who tried to secure knowledge. Odin was driven from his impregnable will of gaining more wisdom. So he settled on his eight legged steam horse and rode to Yggdrasill the ash tree.
Deep beneath the giant ash tree that covered the nine worlds, lay a hidden cave with a secret well, guarded by the giant Mímir. The giant had always been a mentor to the gods and this well gives one who drinks of its water knowledge and wisdom. But the price of drinking from the well was not small.
Odin self-sacrifices his eye to Mímir and knows what is coming. The war. He sees himself on his throne in the skies and the upcoming threats that will trie to conquer everything men had achieved. Odin will win, but also suffer for the hatred and pain to arise, hang on the branch of Yggdrasil for nine days to become the master of the nine spells to save the nine worlds.
Knowledge is power the people say.
Power is steam the lords tell.
