Escape
First 2 Sketches,
I’m currently fiddling with the story background, our hero’s escaping with his love from the bad baron, who had jailed her …
heya all!
it’s funny, every time i’m starting with study work, a challenge pops up that fits into my objectives.
Last time it was my first 3D Short for pre-diploma that went into Strange Behaviour, this time it’s my diploma as digital artist.
My tasks are split up, as the main point is on Character Developement and skill development in anatomy, action line, and dynamic for 2 and 3d. Having a theme with real purpose comes right handy. So why not do a full Concept Illustration ?
Never really brought more into my sketches than just fast character concepts… No story told through pictures. So this is a huge task i’m trying to approach. There are alot talented people around, where I probably can’t keep up with, but I hope to learn alot for myself, or from you?
…
Currently I’m quite hung upon compostioning, as I’ve always started with just drawing faces or stuff… Now I try to frist set up the scene and then go to details. Find that kind of hard to master. Also, i get this kind of blockade thing in my head, when I feel that my hand and brain is not doing what i want and I can’t draw what i feel… argh
I like your general idea…and I´ll follow your progress…
It´s also my first challenge and i don´t think, that my skills are somewhere as good, to be compared with the “big ones”…but the chance to learn something is great…
the last week
i’m pretty much falling over my feet any time now. since last week. i drew around 8 hours a day… pretty much compared to sparse 2-3 hours at its best, per week, in the last year…
it’s a pretty adventure getting to know how to work step by step for a finished art piece. Sometimes i have these ideas, just start to draw Poses of Character which later on don’t fit in the background, or i can’t imagine a background.
The Last image addition, are all sketches that have some of the quality i can reach for now? :). As i followed the idea with the baron chasing the heroe and his love, I realised, it hadn’t a real background related to myth or legend manner… Just plain heros journey plot thrown on some washy surfaces…
ReThinking
So i went on Researching, for that idea and something else, went through egyptian, greek and other mythologies, but got struck by odin, riding on his 8 legged horse and his 2 ravens and 2 wolfs on his sides… Riding along earth every Morning …
Well just followed, what i felt , as always, and the bottom of the above image, is the work of the last 2 full days,
I step back an forth between, okay draw the horse, strong torso pose… then realise oh, odin won’t be seen behind the horses head, back, tweak… bad legs, bad action line… hmpf > back…
I think i have to composite first like in the beginning?? Don’t I??.. But I’m always impatient, or don’t have the ability to abstract my inner ideas to its bases… to develop a sudden mood, posture, composition, feeling…
the Idea
well, I’m not sure about it. And especialy Odin himself, i like that his his horse this victorian frets and alike. Also his Wolfs and ravens as organic machines… But as it comes to the story telling, it should be made believable, … do i want to illustrate odin, or an odin alike divinity(?) rushing into a battle amongst cruel industrial slaverish world… ( like the circled blue sketch down on the bottom)
any critique or help on anything is highly appreciated
Another Composition
Relearning Composition, Depth and so on… All things i never considered, when just sketching a character or anything else…
After crushing my brain against walls of errors and problems, i took some hours off last week.
Just read some stuff about Odin and got a hold on this:
Odin sacrifices his Eye to the giant Mimir in exchange to drink out of the well.
The well gives Odin the knowledge about the future and he so gains more wisdom.
I still feel flatness in all of my comps, also Odin should have been portraited while cutting out his eye, but i didn’t manage to put pain in any pose. So this is the best i may achieve for now…
Started to put some color in, scary…
Second digital painting besides an unfinsihed Matte… The metal and gold/copper on Mimir is going to get tricky.
Learning alot…
Seriusly guys, i’d apreciate some help, advise or anything ?!?
Today i opened up the first sketch and composition i did. And held my breath as I saw I slowly moved away from what I had in mind. The second of the four pics is what i have now. But the third is what it usually was intened to be…
I made Odin smaller, to gain more size on mimir… but lost the Odin through that…
Well hum, looks a little cheesy or kitchy to me, sry dunno the right word in english … but represents most what i had in mind…
Still allot of details to be done… Specially on Mimir… some blood on the eye and skin of Odin, the dagger… Some linkage for the well and a bucket with a rope or something…
chilombiano: oh thank you
still detailing on everything, hell this takes alot of time? my image size is 2400 * 1200, quite big i think, but i can practise alot on painting and stuff… Didn’t use any lasso, path or else yet… maybe i should, but i get to know my wacom better
Hi,nice progress…my opinion is to pimp up the color a little bit, and Maybe the characters face could use some touchups right now look a little bit like paper(to thin)…good luck
thx irawan, you’re talking specially about the giant right? yeah, working on ornaments, for the metal… hope that makes it a bit deeper… i’m kind of afraid touching an area when i got something “good” for my standard … should prolly loose that fear
Interesting myth, this is a nice thing about this challenge, you may find a lot of myths you never heard about
I like the overall look but seems a little flat, maybe a very soft backlight will help to pop up the volume.
yeah, this is one problem i cannot really solve for now… i have the same flat feeling… but… i don’t how to get rid of that?
i could think of some volume light from the back… to underline the giants “divinity” …
or perhaps just more shadow and light on the surfaces itself, more color bleeding? damn so hard to figure out. where to tweak… to add depth…
i could also post the pic without the fog and sfx… as its on different layers
