This concept has been kicking around in the back of my head for almost a decade, a steampunk re-imagining of Beauty and the Beast. My working title has always been “Mascara and Machine Oil.” It has never progressed beyond the stage of a thumbnail drawing and a few rough notes (long since lost or discarded) until this challenge arrived. It envisions both the Beast as a coal fired steam driven behemoth and the Beauty as a brass clockwork driven porcelain skinned mannequin.
The setting itself is inside the Beast’s castle, re-imagined and inspired by Penn Station in New York City.
