Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Nik Ivanov

#21

Well, obviously the challenge is steampunk so it has to be steam, though my initial concept and this sketch are obviously jet propulsion based… but who says steam technology cannot evolve to the point it can’t power a jet engine?

I tried to make it more steamlike by including the hole with the gears and chains in there. I’m actually going to render this engine out more in 2d and attempt to do it in 3d at some point. Actually I’m starting to realize this challenge is not that long… so it limits what I can do with it.

At this point my engineering brain is also hurting with trying to make this thing somewhat realistic in terms of control capabilities. I think I’ll add 2 minor engines on the back for steering and maybe even make them use propellers?

The sad part is that I’m not even sure I’m settled on Baba Yaga as the character I really want to illustrate for this. I have a lot of other legends in mind which lend themselves to this challenge perfectly.

Either way I need to decide on the final concept soon so I can start working on the story some. Hopefully I get some time to work this weekend but Thanksgiving is coming up soon so I’ll have little excuses not to do more work at that point and really move forward with this.

Thanks a lot for the comments everyone. I really need them to push forward with this.

Hi there!

Well, I love the Babba Yaga idea. This can be very funny with a steampunkish approach. I see no problem with the use of jet propulsion, anything is possible, only the visual aspects could be worked further to build a very cool machine: I think you can try adding some baroque pedals and her seat could be a decorated leather one with brass levers or ever joysticks on the arms. Good luck!

Here is a somewhat refined version of the engine which is better shaded. I was thinking of making it bronze but we’ll see.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys!
