Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Matt Nesbary
This is just my first sketch. I just found out about this contest today! I love robots and steam punk 
unfortunately I don’t really care for myths and legends. Basically I’m going to try to take a legend and stretch it as far as I can without totally abandoning the theme. I’m interested in Greek gods but I couldn’t find one with a story I liked. So far I’ve narrowed it down to a few ideas. Character fighting monster will be the basic theme. I’m thinking of Billy the Kid or some other western hero. Daedalus seemed cool but I just like the fact that he builds stuff.
For this image I settled on Black Beard vs Leviathan. Black Beard is a famous pirate… and Leviathan is a giant sea monster. both are getting steam punked
Since this is only my first concept I’m still thinking of changing the whole theme. Some of my reasons so far are…
Pirates and monsters are too common, fun but too similar to pirates of Caribbean?
Using Leviathan may not work because its so big that I have to shrink everything to make it to scale/ or cut half the monster out of the picture. I am working at like 7200x4800 pixels and we can submit high res images so this may not be too much of a problem.
I’m mainly considering weather hero vs monster is a good theme, I might try looking for a new one.
So far I like the picture but the hero (in the center on the ship) is very small and I also want to make the monster a little bigger somehow.

I realize the first image is pretty much a scribbly mess !! so I did a quick color test to give you a better idea of what direction I’m going in.
This is as far as I can get tonight. Just redrew the important parts and made everything cleaner. I’m still thinking about picking another Myth but at least this gives me a good idea of what I could do with the Kraken / Leviathan
