Nice Idea! Looking forward for the next posts
Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Matt Jones
I went to the Royal Armoury over the weekend and there were some fantastic horse armour examples from the ages. I’ve taken these styles and incorporated them into the steampunk theme with my headless horseman idea for this concept sketch. I’m liking this new direction and will start work in 3dsmax, let the work really begin! C&C always welcome, thanks for looking
Why can’t I ever think of these awesome things? Feel cheap picking all the obvious stories. I think maybe you could expand the view-I’m selfish, I just want to see the whole horse with its snazzy armor and all.
Daxtor - Yet more experimentation on the colour of the light last night with no real outcome
I think I need to get everything constructed in 3d and then play with what looks best against the materials. It may turn out that a green light works really nicely against bronze, steel and black leather so watch this space
Lappisch - Yeah that was the initial intention and why in the early sketch I had a dramatic pose showing all of the horse, but after a bit of armour research and thought I want the characters to look both heavy and eerie and having a much closer shot seems to do that well. And I don’t have to model so much!
Cyberone - soapy - molossus - Thanks to you guys too, really appreciate your comments and encouragement! This will be the first challenge I actually finish!!
:wip:
The 3d is coming, I promise… It’s just getting the time to do it! I am quite far on with the head so I should have something to post up later. Thanks
Hi all, I’ve spent some time modelling the horseman’s head. Just getting the model stage nailed before worrying too much about textures, but I rendered out a colour pass to see how much of each metal/material there was. Seems okay so far
C&C always welcome, thanks!
I really like this, and I keep peeking back to see how it’s progressing, but I just noticed something. His right arm is holding up his dismembered head! Before, I thought it was just some deformed knight with a decaying/elongated neck. I have to say, I thought it was creepier before I saw what it really was. Ahh well, it’s still very nice, I just see what I want to see I guess.
Yeeeah that’s the first thing my girlfriend said! I’ll sort that out once it’s modelled, thanks
Nice, I really like the detail you have put into the head. I like the idea of having the light emit from the head. Are you going to have it be uniformly emitting or could one eye/whole be smaller and sharper. You might consider playing w/ it. It may be able to give a hint of a contorted and pained face inside the helmet. Then again it may look like crap.
My work is progressing slowly. I haven’t posted it yet because well… I am new to actively participating and need to download and use the unloader. If you want once i get it up i will post a link for you. I will have to say your estimate of the epic scale of my idea is completely dead on. In fact i don’t think I will be able to get all of it in one shot. At least to a degree that you can see clearly.
Dats what I call StYLe. Really, I love the character. I hope you present it good in the final image.
Good Luck!
TacitusD - Interesting thoughts on the lighting from the head. In my first concept I drew a broken light on the nearest goggle, mainly to add interest and avoid having the light block out the head detail so I may stick to that. I do like the idea of the contorted head, although I may go more for a skull design as the leather parts are supposed to be a kind of skin and that would work nicely. Cheers

Yeah I look forward to the link. I think if you concentrate on a small aspect then you’ll be better off. You’re more likely to finish it, tweak it until you’re happy with it and then if you get time at the end then you can make it bigger! Plus, I don’t know about you but I can’t spend all my time on these challenges so have to be realistic if I want to finish something I’ll be happy with.
mrpeace - Hey thanks! No pressure then
So i finally go my 2 images up… well 1 twice. I posted my concept image from a while ago and then posted a WIP but the WIP got posted twice. I am trying to figure that one out. So here is a link to that thread. Let me know what you think Matt.
Just an update to show I’m still in the game, working on the horse and the pose. Hopefully I’ll be able to block the horse and character out over the next few days and get detailing. C&C welcome, thanks for looking
This is the bulk of the horse modelling done… just got all the straps to make, but I’ll do the dullahan first and get his pose nailed. Moved the hand holding the head along with the viewing angle of the camera. A little more dynamic I think.
Lovely. Know almost nothing about 3D-modeling, but it’ll be interesting to see the progress of this. Keep it up!
So how is your horseman going? My “little” endeavor has come to a stand still. Between the holidays and work i haven’t had a chance to get much done. Seeing as how this is my first CG comp i have learned a lot for the next one… mainly scope. Well i hope your doing better then i am. Maybe a miracle will happen and my computer will do all the textures for me
Good luck
Hey Eli, yeah I think I’m at a standstill too! I recovered from flu - then christmas kept me away and now I’m back at work… I would like to finish this, but maybe not in time for the closing date of the comp. If you find a magic PC that does texturing then put in a good word for me
I think it’s a great learning experience and for the next one you’ll be better prepared, but if you’re like me you’ll still find it tough
