Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Matt Baldwin
Wow, this challenge has been quite difficult for me so far. Coming up with an idea and sticking with it is always something that can hinder me. With the multitude of options for this challenge, it has been hard to stay with something. I began with a takes on the Trojan Horse, Rommulus & Remus, Harpies, and Pegasus and Bellerophon and their defeat of the Chimera. But none seemed to work. Instead I decided to focus of the more LEGEND side of things rather than MYTHOS. So aftering mucking around with Dracula, The Yeti, The Lochness Monster, The Mothman and a few others I’ve rested on the idea of Bigfoot.
Bigfoot is a legend because there has never been any proof of it’s existence despite hundreds of sightings. There are even a few societies devoted to the discovery of the creature. I’ve decide to base my image around the discovery of a BIGFOOT creature and hopefully provide a unique angle to the image regarding story. Here is my first sketch of the environment with a steampunk bigfoot. I haven’t decided if he is alive or dead, but I intend to a have a few steampunk doctors/engineers/scientists around the creature deciding on the next course of action.
I’ve changed by concept slightly, which I will post very soon. Basically I want bigfoot hunting the hunters. Must work fast, here are a couple of designs.
This is my new concept. My older concept just ended up being too complicated. I just want to have some steampunk hunters hiding from one or two steampunk bigfoot creatures as they chase them through the forest. I want to put real fear into the image.
Here is a black and white of the forest setting. I’ve gone a bit bananas with custom brushes and some textures but I hope you like it. I’ve worked hard to get my values correct so let me know if you think more work is required.
Here is the main forest and how I’m progressing with the image. I’m concerning that my colours are too muddy in the foreground. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? Any critique is appreciated. Thanks.
(Will soon have a new post with characters added).
Getting there, lots of detailing to go. I couldn’t resist trying out the fur brush a bit early though. I also am a little stuck on the colours for the humans as well. Fixed the foreground issue by adding more rocks and less grass.
