I did some sketches of Wukong the Monkey God in Journey to the West. I am working on a final style before proceeding on to modeling him in 3D.Critiques and comments are welcome. I want to make use of this opportunity to update my portfolio work and improve my skills.

I like where this is going. I really like the white and black. Helpful hint, I think you should add more gears to the mechanical arms and legs. Maybe add an old light bulb or some old engine with smoke coming out of a pipe. I think it would add to this character.

#4

Concept is yet to be finalize but will look something like this sketch. Will add more details like gears and stuffs to the body to give it a more Steampunk feel.

#5

Hi there! Thanks for the feedback. Yup i agree with you, i will try to incorporate more gears and machinery stuffs. Gotta research more on it first. Thanks!

#6

This is the scene that I had in mind and wanted to make from the start. But I don’t think i have the time to model out all 4 characters in Journey to the West. Will most likely be doing one or 2 characters at most.

#7

Heh i really love Journey to The West theme!! and your concept for those characters are really interesting. Love it!! Love to see more of it

#8

the story is famous and very interesting. your concept privides a nice imagination . I believe it would be perfect. atmosphere is imorptant to you .

#9

Hi Stylize & Zboot! Thanks for the comments and advice. I will try my best to finish this challenge! That’s my main aim!!!

#10

I tried modeling my initial concept in 3d. But it looked kinda weird. Like something is lacking. The transition from 2d to 3d was trickier than I imagined it to be.
Today I bought this Mega Man Zero art book. In it had many great inspirations and references. I decided to take a step back to improve my existing concept before going back to modeling.
Comments and critiques welcome as always.

#11

suddenly by placing the old concept and new concept together, i prefer the look of the earlier one. but i like the details in the newer concept. I guess got to try and blend the best of both concepts into one…

#12

hey kwanky… nice progress so far… looking forward for your final design…good luck with the challenge

#13

still experimenting with the look of the monkey god Wukong. Quite like the look of this, just need to tweak it more to have a steampunk feel to it. hopefully i can finish my concept & start to model over the weekend. (keeping my fingers crossed…)

#14

Cool man, i like this latest style of your monkey king. very stylize and the silhouette looks solid enough^^

but little comment about the tigh, it look abit too rough and big? hmm…this is my own opinion, anyway that is quite an improvement from your earlier concepts.

#15

Did a simple blocking out of shapes in 3dsmax. Wanted to test out the different look of Wukong in 3d before proceeding in more detailed modeling. By scaling and adjusting various parts i realized i had many interesting looks to Wukong. Critiques and comments welcome. Thanks!

#16

hi guangy, i tink if u are to stick to a more stylised wukong, keep the proportion to latest concept, it looks great and just the right amount of punkishness. The 3D seems abit blown too much. Love the way u do the hair, Punked!

#17

trying to model and add gears and parts to wukong

#18

looks cute:) hope to see more details:) Would love to see the stylize proportion of him  keep it up:beer:

Hi Hwang Kwang,

Nice progress, Gambate! :buttrock: I have a suggestion, you might want to try apply Blinn on the shader to test out metal specular on the model for accurate shading, it certainly helps in the modelling process.
