Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Kimmo Ala-Ojala

#21

heres the wires of the steam box
Ive been doing mutch of optimizing because my OS is 32bit I keep running out of memory while building heavy scene.

#22

testing camera angles and materials.
I dont have mutch time with this so Im
trying to keep materials as simple as possible.

#23

Very nice style… Your textures are great!.. Maybe less brightness…but, is a personal opinion…

Good start…

Cheers

Bira

#24

yes you might be right, its too bright…

todo list:

  1. add some dirt and scratches to the material
  2. more materials now only metal (some wood pieces, black/darker pieces… etc)

#25

I like it as it is…I admit…the last render is a bit shiny…but is so well done that i cant see a mistake in it.
Good job…

#26

heres the updated instrument.
added some color variation and dirt and
scratches. there might be too mutch of
dirt and scratch… “must go to sleep”
what do you think?

#27

Unique brasswork there! I would suggest a “rustiness” in your textures as well.

#28

here turned down a bit the bump and put some blue/green color to corroded spots
and I kept the corrosion away from the top of the instrument cos it didnt felt good that the players hands would be in corroded strings.
tubes are supposed to be copper and square parts brass and darker stands are cast iron maybe…

#29

amazing progress, well done, maybe just to say that maybe you can use probably an intermediate value of dirt between both previous images. good work! :buttrock:

#30

Hey Kimmo,

Really cool work, great model and textures for the instrument, great  Cheers!!

#31

Remodelled the character in maya cos my laptop cant handle mudbox and objects over 50000 polys. In maya I can optimize it easily.

about the instrument:
All textures are enviroment textures, 3D or projected cos I dont have the time to tweak the uvs.

#32

finally I got the character next to the instrument… brass and copper materials need some work

#33

well… now when I see this in here I notice that bolts in the near pipes are too large…

#34

#35

Nice job, but in my opinion you could make kantele more visible becouse now it’s somehow lost between all of these machinery. But it’s still great pic.

#36

Thanks. I might do that.
well Im happy with the composition but Im planning to change
the lights setup so the väinämöinen and kantele would be
in the center of the lights… lightning/sparks coming from the strings? who knows…
and the bottom and background of the image would be darker… I even might put some blur to the background pipes

#37

Well its finished.
Ive changed quite a lot the materials and lightining. I like more this 2d/painted style.
So I used only Maya+MentalRay and Photoshop. I also tried MudBox but my machine couldnt handle it.

Main character is Väinämönen, part of finnish mythology. In many stories he is known as the god of chants, songs and poetry. So Ive built him a steampunked string instrument “kantele” and a steampowered amplifier.

The story:
Väinämönen is starting tonights show.
The amplifier runs smoothly and audience is exited. Instrument seems to work all right.
Then he switches on his left kantele controller.
first sounds rise to the night and the crowd goes wild.

#38

Amazing…this image has STYLE…I love how you have implemented the GRUNGE look in the image. And the overall color tones really look appealing! Good Luck!

Just updating a bit. Fixed the smoke, now its fully 2d smoke and looks more real. also tweaked the beard.
