Enkidu’s model is complete for now. Once I get Gilgamesh finished up I will be doing a Zbrush pass on both (at least their organic areas). I may be changing the approach to the final image, pending time left. If I find I don’t have enough time to texture I will pose up the models in the scene and then paint over in Photoshop/Painter for the final image. Either case, I still expect to get the models completed (textures, rig, etc), even if it isn’t for this competition.
Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Justin Hrala
Update on Gilgamesh. I’m going to have to decide how to approach his backpack, and decide on if I’ll integrate it into the mesh or make it a separate solid object.
Well, I have no power at my apartment due to a nasty ice storm that came through New England, and I’m really not sure when I’ll have power again. So, as I’m staying with a friend (but don’t have my newest project files for 3ds max, as I’m on my tablet PC), I figure I should work on something, so attached is what I’ll be doing for the image composition and color. I still plan on doing the 2d/3d paintover thing, but as Gilgamesh isn’t going to be fully in the scene, I don’t have to completely finish his model, but now I have to make his lion cub, which will be vainly scratching at the bull. After the competition, I think I’ll be going back and refining the models even further, just because.
Finishing up Gilgamesh’s model. I have to finish up the straps for the engine object on his back and a control system for the tanks (they power his punches). I changed that system around a bit.
I’ll be modeling the bull this week, should get it done by the weekend. Then I have to get the lion cub done, and then maybe, just maybe, I’ll start compiling everything.
I didn’t like the original design of Gugalana, so I changed it. This design is already changing a bit as I start to model it.
Started the model. I’ll have this done by the end of the weekend, and then I’ll start setting up the scene.
Hmm, the image didn’t upload… trying again later.
Edit: Image is now loaded, odd. I totally forgot about the ears. They are on the model now, but not in that image. I’ll comp all the models together later. Last model to make is Gilgamesh’s hammer, which will be the representation of the lion cub.
Here’s how I incorporated the lion cub for Gilgamesh. The models are rigged, I have to pose them and set up the scene, gather matte images, being deployed to Iraq helped (I have plenty of images from 2004). After that, I start the final.
Here’s the shadow, base color, and early compilation renders. I start doing a bit of matte painting and whatnot tomorrow. Stoked.
great stuff buddy!
i like the scene your going at… there’s a great sense of dynamism! i really like to see this completed! can’t wait to see this with background!
just some super minor suggestions… just to enhance your shot, maybe you can distort your camera lens a bit! to really emphasize the feeling that “Oh! Here it comes!!”. you can lower your angle just a little and have it’s focal length value down to along 20-24… just play around it a bit… the lower it gets, the greater the distortion! good luck!
Started painting up the background, will be finishing up by Friday, touching up Saturday. My process changed dramatically through the contest, but I am pleased thus far.

good job!
