This, friends, is how the poor man (or the man without talent) creates reference images.

edit: I’ve been wanting to enter this competition for a good couple of weeks; I just had to tie up some loose projects and work before starting (and I’m still not really done). Meanwhile, I’ve been thinking long and hard about what to create. I’ve come down to the tale of Sun Wu Kong, the Chinese Monkey King from the 1600s story “Journey to the West”.

In particular, I’ll be looking at a battle between him and the Bull Demon King (Niu Mo Wang). Here, I’ll show a large, pipe-chrome-brass fortress, with a large bull-like machine with his arms raised in power (holding a giant hammer or axe; I’m not sure which the weapon of choice of the bull demon was), and the monkey in the far fore-ground gaping up at his size.

I’ll happily admit that using action figures might not be the best way to get accurate proportions and poses, but it was more for the perspective of the building and the bull’s relative size than anything else. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve seen some awesome entries so far, and while I don’t think I stand a chance of winning, it’s more for the experience and critique. So when some actual painting begins, please crit away.

Trying to work out the basic layout. Still moving things around and getting a feel for the perspective. The bull seems a little rigid, but then he is meant to be a machine.

Monkey King!!

Is that the one and the same that Jet Li played in Forbidden Kingdom?

hehehe… giggly movie.

Thanks.

@Confuzzled: From how you describe the Forbidden Kingdom, it’s one and the same. :stuck_out_tongue:

@KolorGuild: Making him stand up without falling was a mission in itself. XD I’m still struggling to just sit down and paint, but things should improve toward the end of this week. (Then again, I can clearly remember telling someone else that before… 0_0)
