Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Henrik Jacobson
Hey man,
I really love what you got going on here. I’ve always loved the story of Narcissus. I really like the drawing you got and I think it’s going to look great once you have the “steampunk” influence in there. I’ll definitely be watching you.

Just a bit more refined sketch. Still not the final design or values. I need to make him more steampunk, a few more gears and rivets here and there perhaps. He’s a bit too modern right now.
And the values; This sketch make it seem like it’s daylight.(Mainly cause my scanner is crappy) But I (I think) intend to make it more like dusk or even evening with fireflies as lightsources. But I’m just playing with ideas so I don’t really know
yeah man I like it. I especially like your choice of lighting. fireflies sounds great. Seems like it would be awesome if it was that sort of smoky-dusk lighting. That eerie palette, combined with the steam-punk Narcissus would be a very cool looking piece.
I’ll see what I come up with. Gonna sketch alot more on this theme before I start painting. I won’t settle for partial satisfaction this time. Full control, that’s what I’m aiming for.
Yeah, about your tablet, guess it’s going to sting a lil’ bit in your wallet. But an artisian needs his tools. John William’s piece is indeed inspirational, he’s actually done a Narcissus piece. http://www.penwith.co.uk/artofeurope/waterhouse_echo_narcissus.jpg
But mine will as I said, probably be set in a darker atmosphere.
Yeah, I thought about doing something more action-oriented until I stumbled upon Narcisuss. Thought it was such a perfect picture.
First base color and basic lighting test. Don’t know if I’ll go with these colours, or if it will be set in the nighttime as this sketch seem to be. Gonna play around quite a bit.
Hey Henrik,
Looking good, love the idea, whats the story around the character?, its very moody, I love it, i’ll keep posted, look forward to updates!
Cheers!

hey man,
I love what you got going for the mood so far. I think it’s a strong choice in terms of the palette for colours. It’s a composition I read positively at first glance and I think that’s important. Keep going!

Goodie goodie.
Perhaps I’ll stick with this layout for a while and see if it’s what I want it to be.
Thanks.
one thing I was thinking about though…the area on the right is empty at the moment. Were you planning on filling it with some fg elements? If not, it may be a good idea to pull into the subject a little bit because my eye seems to wander off to the right. I could be very wrong but that’s how I was reading it.
Yup, there is gonna be some grass, reeds and other details I havn’t thought about yet. Perhaps a frog or something. Right now I’m sitting and figuring out lightsources. Have applied some moonlight and changed the fireflies a bit.
Started testing some rendering. Just to get a feel of how I want to proceed, texture-wise. Added moonlight too. Since moonlight’s a cool bluish tone I changed the colour of the light the fireflies emits. Otherwise it would’ve been blue light on blue light which could be a bit boring.
I’ve figured out the basic lightsources and started rendering a bit. Will do something about the grass/moss texture when I figure it out. A long way too go.
Btw, for you who don’t know the story of Narcissus can spend a minute reading about him http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_(mythology)
I decided to depict him post mortem, in a state of decomposition because I haven’t seen any artist do that before.
Nice work, I like the concept and it’s quite simple in essence so you’ll be able to get it finished just how you like it
I like his hand in the water, although as he is so close to the water and been there so long do you think he should be slightly sunk into the ground? I’m just thinking of when you see a rock at the edge of the beach where grass starts to grow and you can see swirls from where the water has washed around it. Great stuff so far ![]()
Very nice so far. I love the idea of a steampunky Narcsissus and having him in that dark mood will be quite dramatic.
Lycka till!
Yup, I’ve been meaning to make him look more sunken into the ground. He’s lying at the edge of a pond though and not by some bigger mass of water, so there hasn’t really been any waves hitting him. So the water hasen’t affected him directly, just undermined the ground beneath him.
The progress this far is mostly to figure out which textures to paint, lighting and colours. Alot more forms and details will be crammed in as I progress.
Thanks for commenting!
Just rendering further. Playing around with details and figuring things out, such as textures, fungus, atmospheric effects, floating particles and whatnot.
This is often my prefered process lately. Just progress slowly, taking my time and playing around with ideas.
Just to show the level of detail I’m meaning to put into this. It’s afterall 34 days left so I’ll take my time
Hope ye dig.
I’m having a hell alot of fun anyways.
