Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Erich Schreiner
Hi there!
My first idea is about the troyan horse…perhaps a dark scene when the horse unloads its deadly freight led by Achilles and Odysseus (have to do a little research first to be sure which characters participated) or a scene after troy lost the fight.
I know that this myth is almost overused, but perhaps i could give it some fresh ideas.
I also looked at some nordic / germanic mythologies. perhaps Odin and his brothers fighting Ymir, but i fear that the ‘story aspect’ might be lost by some characters fighting each other…well let’s see.
I hope to make things clear soon…good luck to you all

i read ur ideas and i think they’re very cool…
how about this: a steampunk horse scaring the troyan soldiers while Achilles and Odysseus are preparing a susprise attack. (maybe the troyan thought that the horse was a punishment from the gods, and the greek took advantage of that to prepare an ambush)
well i dont know if u like that… but i think is a good idea…

thanks for your thoughts…although i decided to do a different story. after i realized that one may also do faery tales, historical stories and themes from the bible i was a bit overwhelmed and read many faery tales and other stuff ( greek mythologies, nordic mythologies,…).
Finally i decided to do a scene of Samson and Delila (old testament). I think i can build a nice dramatic scene around that story. I can use facial expressions, body language and dramatic lighting…so let’s see what happens.
For those of you who do not know the story of Samson and Delila:
Samson (also Simson, Shimshon) was an israelitic judge, equipped with supernatural strenth by god that he used a lot against the enemies of his people. The secret of his powers was his hair, if it would be cut, he would lose them. One day he fell in love with Delila ( also Delilah, Dalia. in hebraic it means of weak character), who belonged to the Philistines. She was offered a certain amount of money if she would betray Samson and tell his secret to the Philistines, so she tricked him to tell her his secret. After that she cut his hair and he was caught by the Philistines, who blinded him.
I decided to go for a dramatic lit interior as the general setting for the scene. Through the window in the back i will show a steam driven aircraft. On the right will be the main action:
Samson upset and sad, holding pieces of his hair in his hands, staring unbelievingly at delila.
Delila with a knife behind her back plus some hair of Samson on her dress. I will make her either look very arrogant down upon him, or slightly sad, so as if she knows that she did something wrong etc… did not decide on that yet.
On the left side i will show some Philistines ( or a Philistine SteamBot) entering the room to catch the now weak and betrayed Samson.
I won’t use a fancy perspective etc, because it just won’t fit what i will picture.
Above you see a first very rough scribble, just to get an idea for the shapes, spacing and position of the figures.
A next step will be researching certain things: clothing, steampunk designs, pictures who show figures in the bodylanguage i need, materials etc…
After this i can start with the design of the dresses, the Philistines, the interior and at the end i will have a refined sketch of the above scribble with lots of details in it.
here i tried to open things up for more depth. also placed some foreground elements to establish a feeling of fore- middle and background. the last sketch looks mor like a stage…which also might not be bad for the scene.
i thinkl i will try out a few other things before i can decide which way i wanna go.

well, back to a calmer scene. i think this will fit the overall mood of the whole scene better.
i cared for repeating round shapes, angular shapes and for a recognizable center of interest on the right. i will discuss this more in depth when i have a finished sketch. next step will be researching steampunk elements (visuals) and other stuff i need for making things tight.
the figures and their interaction will be tough to solve…
