Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Dennis Allain

good solid comments… thanks! I am going to work a great deal more on the camera angle as well. I have a huge couple of deadlines so I will have to post some new stuff later next week. I have some AO tests that I may post up in the meantime.
Thanks again,
Cheers

This is the latest in a ton of different camera angles that I have struggled with. I am happy with the angle but still have some modeling work to do.
Crits encouraged.

I think it’s great job on modeling and camera angle is good. Maybe some different angle to expose the model more ?..

Very cool stuff. I’m really digging that last color piece. As far as crits go- the right side of the image is great, where the left seems just a slight bit overwhelming at the moment. So much going on- maybe there is a way to break it up visually with some lighting techniques? Then again, maybe its not a problem at all

Great work!

haha lots of ‘steam gooblygook’ to the left… You have a good point. I could, and was, thinking of bringing up the foreground detail to the left and having some ‘survivors’ in the closest lifeboat. There will also be some steam and larger waves to help obscure some of the detail.
Kerem_ thanks for the feedback!

I am also toying with turning the boat slightly so that the canons can be aimed at the beast. The only problem with that is I would lose that sense of ‘Chase’. I like the feel of the monster chasing the boat.
Thanks again for the feedback.

I think the huge tentacle cuts your composition in half. Maybe wrap that tentacle around the composition instead of straight through, or have more overlap. Still a dope image.

#27

I think you have a really good model, maybe move the angle of the camrea just a bit to see more of it?

#28

This will be the final shot. I have done some painting and will update the image in the next day or two with the last WIP and will post the final by the end of the week. Thanks for all the feedback and good luck to everybody…

#29

premium stuff dude - like it very much - cool mood and great modeling !

#30

Wow. To say the truth…this is one of the remarkable WIP images I saw so far. No textures and stuff yet…it is very dynamic…very complex…I love to see this end!

#31

This is looking really amazing. I would say its a little chaotic, but over all that lends to the scene.

#32

thanks for the feedback… yeah its a bit chaotic and to be honest I think there are some issues with the composition. But, my hope was to do something a little ‘off’ in the hopes of making the viewer feel like they were part of the experience instead of just looking at it… tougher said than done I suppose. I will have some paint WIPs soonish.

Here is a close up of the backside ‘furnace’ of the beast. Although I have Bodypaint I usually texture/paint all my images in Photoshop. I should have the image finished in the next day or so.

#34

Another element of the final image. I am trying to mix the amount of detail with a more loose/natural painting approach.

#35

Your work is superb! no crits so far

Cant wait to see the final image…

amazing rendering style! can’t wait to see it finished.

SORRY DOUBLE POST- I used the CG Uploader for the final…

Here is my final image. If I wait until the final day I may risk playing with the rendering too much. My goal was to take as dynamic an angle as I could while showing as much of the sea monster and ‘victim’ as possible. I also tried to assemble a composition that showcased all the elements and helped draw the viewer into the chaos of the battle.
The story is about the Bermuda Triangle - also known as The Hoodoo Sea. This image depicts an encounter with , what the seafarers have dubbed, “the devils cauldron”. A monstrous beast forged from Haematite (Blood Ore) by the devil himself to prey upon ships making the trek from Europe to the Americas.
Thanks to everybody for there input, good luck to all.
Cheers,
D

good stuff, i like the painted feel that you gave it, i was contemplating whether to do mine like that as its kinda hard to do so much 3d when i could have paint it in the 1st place. but yours look great!
