Latest Update: Work In Progress: Hannibal Steampunk WIP

#2

Concept work portraying the story of Perseus and Medusa with Polydectes turned to stone. Snakes on Medusa’s head will be mechanized to display the steampunk theme along with various other details to further enhance the steampunk look.

#3

I’ve decided to change up my concept and go with Hannibal, the Carthaginian military commander, leading his army and war elephants through the Alps.

#4

More initial concepts. Trying to find the right composition and feeling.

#5

Initial composition and lighting study. Working on getting the background to look like it is lost in the snow storm.

#6

Starting to detail out the elephant. Still working on getting the background right.

#7

Further detailing on the elephant. Still needs quite a bit work but I’m happy with the composition. I’m going to add some guys holding on for life in the basket on the elephants back and then having a guy falling out of the basket to help balance out the elephant.

#8

Continuing to add some details. Also playing with the ambient lighting.

I started to get the feeling that the piece was looking too warm. I intentionally made it warm so that I could play up the copper/bronze look on the elephant but my feeling is that it did not look cold enough and wasn’t communicating the story. I’m torn between the cool or warm look. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I love your concept. Hannibal crossing the alps is one of my favorite paintings by Turner, This is looking really great. You might think about making the sky darker because of cloud cover and giving the figures action stances.
