Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Alice Agostini
In Greek mythology, Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. Her beauty caused Apollo to grant her the gift of prophecy. However, when she did not return his love, Apollo placed a curse on her so that no one would ever believe her predictions.

The basic feeling I want to express is a beautiful woman suffering for her curse: to predict the future and never been listened. The sufference and feeling of being impotent. The steampunk monocle is the symbol of her being forced to see the future, while the scare on her mouth symbolize the pain of her curse.

Wonderful start there! :applause:
Love the hair style and the mechanical eye.
Will there be more things in the background or is this primarily a portrait?
Really appreciated comments! Thank you!
Try, I think about this piece mainly as a portrait, but I’m thinking about adding some gears in the background…I’m still finding the inspiration for something which recalls me curse and sufference
Lovely start!
I think you should redesign the monocle.
The part of the belt that goes across her forehead should be more in line with the part on the other side. I think if you move the point of attachement more towards the top and front side of the monocle , it would be better.
What about some kind of hair decoration (a hat?)
Also, when she will be all dressed up the victorian way, within this composition, it won’t be clear that she is really a character from Greek Mythology… perhaps you might have to expand the canvas and add some Greek architecture or something in the background… just a thought…
Interesting and Inspiring… I already feel something here… It’s well started, I’m curious to discover more… best wishes for the following steps ![]()
NR43, thank you for your suggestions.
About the monocle, yes!! It’s exactly what confused me, thank you! ^^
And about the Greek recalls, I was thinking about using them in a decorative way in the baackground…I mean, not a “real” greek architecture, but to use the decorative elements of greek art…if it works with steampunk, of course (we will see lol)
I adore hats, but I can’t see one of them on this girl… I am still trying to figure out some hair decoration, but I’m still not sure if I want one here… ^^
Thank you very much for looking and commenting, always helpful!
update:
shadowing again, and then the first test on skintones…

Nothing to crit for the moment… do you planed to add other steampunk elements than her eyes… or it’s definitively choosen ?
I want the monocle to be the main steampunk element, and the focus of the image.
Then I’m inspired by the whole steampunk culture, that’s why I dressed her in a victorian style dress.
I’m thinking about a texured background, with metal recalls and some gear. Maybe a Art Nouveau styled background.
I have to merge some greeks decorative elements with the steampunk ones, I’m waiting for the right “image in my mind”
Thanks for the precision… enough points could be give something really Steampunk… glad to hear !
and especially “Art Nouveau” details… love that
she’s starting to look tortured. Very cool monalcle. Look forward to the background. It sounds like it’s going great.

ok, here’s the result of a night of painting.
The color are blocked in; obviously the dress and hair still need a lot of work, and same for the monocle.
I’m satisfied of the background, it will match the goldy metal pieces I will add later, I think.

HEY…Alice…
What I really liked about the first drawing on your first post, was/is the line coming from the corner of her mouth…The angle, lenght, and shape of it gave/gives her a really sexy smile kind of appeal, …Also on the far side of her mouth, her upper lip overlappes and creates a 45 degree angle from top lip to bottom lip in the first drawing, which I liked…Now that angle is reversed, making the bottom lip appear to stick out too far on the far side of her mouth.
Changing those two things in the painting process has given her a totally different expression…I miss that sexy appealing smile that you captured in the first drawing…
…Just my personal feeling though.
Keep going,…Your doing …GREAT…![]()
TAKE CARE
Glenn
hey Glenn
glad to see you stopped here!
I’m planning to preserve that expression in the finished painting, I liked it too… I’m still trying to fix the skin tones and the painting of it… when fixed, I will refine the expression; the eye too needs more expression and detail.
I’m a quite chaotic painter
Thank you for commenting!!
Even with only one eye, her glance is very strong… that make all in her attitude ![]()
nothing to add… just waiting :wavey:
