Scylla was once a beautiful nymph, but was turned into a hideous sea monster by the witch Circe.
According the Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’, the monster has six heads, each with three rows of razor sharp teeth. She lives in a cave high above a narrow straight of water, opposite the whirlpool ‘Charybdis’. Any boats who wished to pass through the narrows would have to sail close to one or other of these dangers - the monster or the whirlpool.
On the way back from the Trojan war, Odysseus and his men had to pass through this straight, and chose to risk Scylla (and lose six men) over the whirlpool (and potentially lose the entire ship).
