Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Alex Jenyon
From ‘The Odyssey’ - Odysseus and his crew pass through a narrow straight between high cliffs on their way back from the Trojan war.
On one side of the straight is the whirlpool ‘Charybdis’, and in a cave on the opposite cliff lives the six headed sea monster ‘Scylla’.
The concept is looking fabulous already! Some great light-dark play there. Best of luck to you Alex!
ahh dangit. Alex is in on this contest too? Dang this is a great painting so far. Look forward to more updates
Alex this is lovely original idea. Love it … lets see how it turns out to be. Good luck friend.

As usual when I’ve got time to really work up an image, I’ve done a rough pre-vis in ‘SketchUp’ to lock down my composition.
I’m going to paint over this, so a lot of the fine details will be decided then.
Thanks to ‘3D warehouse’ for the placeholder man model, and parts of the ballista on the prow.
Thanks to everyone above who replied - glad you like the sketch. I hope I can carry that though the finished illustration.
@leigh - Thanks! I kind of missed the point of the last CG challenge I entered, and the final image suffered as a result. I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen this time.
@mordecaidesign - Cheers mate. You’re entering too, right?
@seili - Lighting is one of the things I really love painting. I just need to work my figure drawing up to the same level…
Enjoy.

Starting to paint in the primary elements. Still to figure out where the soldiers on deck are going to go, and a whole lot of detail, haze, smoke and vfx to add.
Scylla was once a beautiful nymph, but was turned into a hideous sea monster by the witch Circe.
According to homer’s ‘The Odyssey’, the monster has six heads, each with three rows of razor sharp teeth. She lives in a cave high above a narrow straight of water, opposite the whirlpool ‘Charybdis’.
Any boats who wished to pass through the narrows would have choose to sail close to one of these dangers - the monster or the whirlpool.
On the way back from the Trojan war, Odysseus and his men had to pass through this straight, and chose to risk Scylla (and lose six men) over the whirlpool (and potentially lose the entire ship).
Really good work…
I would also be able to fully express my imagination, but I lack the technique. I am very impressed by those shows so good. Good luck for the competition!
Thanks for your great comments everyone…
I think I’ve finally got the correct version of Java running, so hopefully I’ll be able to upload a full-res image as well before the deadline.
