hi Nick, thanks,
hopefully you have not subscribed in vain - I hope I will have enough time to finish this piece, or - a few more wip stages at least … :slight_smile:

hi Johan, thanks (neither have I, not even browsing CGTalk forums recently … )
I am glad you dropped in, and glad you like folowing the process :slight_smile:

here is the first rough ZBrush scientist concept (wip, no detailing) …

#23

Beautiful work…thats what I call style…!:applause:

#24

Sachithra, thanks a lot!

#25

… and another one -
a quick concept paintover (Painter over ZBrush model);
it is still very rough image - it was only very roughly “rendered” for Painter (just a low/screencapture actually, with only a few quick paintover strokes);

I decided to model the scientist character head in ZBrush, since I wanted to have some more variants to choose from (different angles etc.) in the end, while setting up the final composition;
for now - I only chose one of possible angles of the head, not paying attention to anything else (color, detailing, cleaning the lines etc.), just to see how it works (or - how it may work with the composition - so far) …

I still love this concept. The apparatus you have designed there looks great, looking forward to updates

#27

i really like this, just love the idea and everytime i’m amazed by your very nice color schemes! Good luck!

#28

ooooh! :smiley: cool concept!!! like it! there’s much freedom to add fun steampunk stuff since it is a lab! not to mention medusa’s head! goodluck!

hi, after a while here is another little update:
I finally completed the laboratory concept /image layout;

after roughly suggesting/deciding for the possible scientist?s body/pose, and after putting all previously designed elements together (very roughly) behind him, I finally set the whole scene - and - at the same time - I finally completed the rough concept stage of the process;
since now I can start refining the image, cleaning the shapes, adding and refining all (still) missing details etc.

its a lot of work though
(and little time left),
I still have to

  • design Medusa?s head/character
  • design the Medusa?s apparatus (in order to have at least some little logic in it, if possible)
  • prepare and add a lot of other details/staff (nitroglycerin chemical structure chart on the wall - and/or James Watt potrtait instead; a few explosives/boxes with explosives tossed out down the floor here and there, and so on …)
  • draw the large-scale outline artwork … and then “render it all out” in Painter, in the end …

will try to make it on time,
cheers a.

James - thanks, glad to hear that;
hope you´ll like the rest of the laboratory too, after I (hopefully) complete it one day :slight_smile:

hi Cindy! glad to see you here, thanks!

hi Ronald, thanks!
… yes, exactly, that is why I like this topic so much too, great freedom to play around with all those possible (and also “impossible”) gadgets, apparats, and other thinkable stuff :slight_smile:

from Wikipedia:
"… While … some sculptors (and vase-painters) of the fifth century began to envisage her as a being beautiful woman, … in Greek mythology Medusa (Greek: Μέδουσα (M?dousa) was a gorgon, a chthonic female monster … "

I tried to follow original Greek mythology, so - in my version Medusa?s appearance will be a “women-monster”.

There will be only the lower part of her face visible in my scene (and the snakes, of course), but I roughly defined her face as a whole, anyway … (modelled a quick model in ZBrush again, then did a quick paintover in Painter, just to get a simple “guide” for my illustration; in the final version there is going to be a bit more details added to her face in Painter)

little update: little last rough concept tweaks - I finally included all the main elements, incl. Medusa?s head, into the scene;
next steps: lineart and then final “2D/Painter rendering”; decided for a bit stylized “illustration-look” in the end;

A few examples of brass shading/coloring tests;
there won?t be such an intensive red in the final image; optimizing this particular little testing image for the limited 150KB low-res output pushed the color palette a little bit too much to the red here; the colors used for final illustration are going to be less saturated.
Done in Painter; first example prepared in grayscale, then colorized, the two little examples below painted by picking colors straight away.
Still not sure about the black outlines, I?ll see.

… forgot to post yesterday;
hope the animation will show,

another Painter-rendering test,
the style I want to use for the final image …

#36

Awesome brass depiction Alena ! can’t wait to see the final render :slight_smile:

#37

thanks, Nick,
actually, I was trying to upload also a close-up image
and a little "making-of demo - but I was not succesfull so far,
so I´ll try again, later …

(btw - I am also looking forward to hopefully see/do the final render, lol,
a lot of work to do, but only a few days left … :frowning: )
glad you dropped in,

… I´ve been trying a few times today again to post another image as a regular “milestone/wip entry”, but I have not been succesful so far,
so I am posting it straight away here instead …

just a closeup image of the previous post -
a Painter/brass rendering test,
plus a little “making-of” demo/animation
(sorry for bad *gif quality, I had to reduce the file size/color palette here pretty dramatically);

about the process: started with a rough sketch (chose one of previously designed elements of mine, used as a guide); then - smudged/blended the first sketch with blenders to get rid of the rough “sketchy” look, fixed the shape, added shadows, lights, smoothed the surface, added details, texture, colors …

the brass apparats/elements are going to be pretty small within the final image, so I won´t have to add any further detailing, I guess, I only plan to remove the guiding lines and to add a few subtle outlines here and there, to emphasize/separate the shapes, where needed …
