Steam Train with FumeFX

#1

Hi Guys

I am trying to do a steam train scene and I am thinking of using FumeFX for the the steam (I would usually go with Afterburn, but after some research I found this image by Andrew Averkin on threedy forum and I must say it looks awesome)

I have done a dummy for the train, linked a simple source to it (Cylinder emitting steam upwards) and animated it going from left to right.

After much trying I cant seem to get a very good dense steam yet keeping a lot of details in it - the movement I’m getting is also pretty vague

I have uploaded a simpel max 2009 file with my setup - if anybody wants to take a look - or maybe someone have some tips and tricks to archive the dessired effect.

Ok I’ve been playing around a little more

I made a small render with what I got so far

http://www.bannestyle.dk/Steam/TrainSteam_01.mov

and heres is the max 2009 file

http://www.bannestyle.dk/Steam/TrainSteam_004.max

I’m having some trouble when decreasing the spacing to get a higher resolution voxels - it seems that my detailing in the steam dissappears - it just turn into a big consisten plume

Oh well I’ll work some more on it tomorrow

If anybody has some tips and tricks it will be greatly appreciated

I’m not sure if this will help you or not but it might give you another idea to work with. A few years back I did some train steam effects on Narnia using Max and Afterburn and a basic pflow setup. You may need to adjust some of the settings for your effects but it might work for you. Feel free to download the file here if you like:

And here is a preview :

Hope this helps

In your Obj/Src tab change your smoke type from “set” to “add” this adds voxels to your fuel. I’ve gotten some nice results pumping more voxels in there.

Hi guys

thanks for the replies

andybyrne462: I will try that - haven’t changed that before, maybe this could help me

Intrinsia: Thanks for the file, very helpfull - though I usually work with AB - thought I might get the result with fume just as training:-)
