Starting to draw

#1

Hi , im a former cg wannabe artist…but i found out that i needed to improve my classical art techniques if i intended to move further on 3d…so…im starting to re-learn how to draw now…so do you guys have any advice for beginners? like…if i should start by copying other people drawings to get my lines good…and them move on to study anatomy and form and then pose…im kinda lost here…trying to draw things from my head and having little sucess with it.

so…any ideia?

Lower your expectations. Art is an expression, not a process.

Answer this question for yourself:

“What is it I want to draw?”

Then start to draw it.

It will be bad… it is bad for everybody (there are not very many Van Gogh’s in this worl who are born with a gift - it that was you would know it already ;)). You will have to do it over and over again. There is only one way to learn to draw or shade and thats to draw and shade.

As I mentioned to another guy, try using a picture as your reference but draw it upside down. This will help show you if its your hand or your eye thats holding you back.

Keep it simple. do not focus on completing the whole image. (this is why you need to turn it upside down - it breaks this natural tendency). Focus only on a smal part of it. An eye, a hand… my current project started with a boot…

this is a picasso… worth a small fortune. Like I said, lower your expectations, because even the masters struggle.

Aye, and Kandinsky is an even worse painter, but still he is an idol.

Rafa-el,

Check out the Anatomy Forum and participate.

Lots of Workshops to participate in - for example, the most recent OFDW:
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Mixed Masters - 020

That one concludes on Jan. 5th, but you are more than welcome to use the reference provided and to do Master Copies in your own time.

I recommend starting up a sketchbook and listening to the advice of the many participants there who are also working on drawing and painting skills.

Cheers,

rebbecca - i think i should wander around this forum more…im a member for quite some time now and i never saw those workshops…at least i dont remember seeing them…thanks a lot…thats another thing that i wanted to read…that i need to start by copying photos or another persons work…to get used to the shapes and forms…i will start to try and copy some of the masters works…but i feel like im not capable of it yet because i suck at shading…but i will give it a try , and dont expect to make a perfect copy of a master work so soon.

thank you all

It’s challenging to draw off the top of your head especially if you don’t have much experience drawing.

Any idea? Have a sketchbook habit. Digital or using real pencils/pens/brushes with real paper. Doesn’t matter much as long as your draw EVERY DAY. 2-3 minutes sketches or longer. Doesn’t have to take long. Up to you how long or how much you want to draw, so long as you do it every day. Draw from refs, draw from life, draw from your imagination. And learn from books or other forms of instruction (online, videos, classes, etc.) as you develop your skills.

Practice works!

since my last reply to this post i started drawing like crazy just doing sketches to train porpotion…havent nailed it yet , since im not just drawing static figures ive been venturing even with some foreshortening…maybe thats too much for someone who has started drawing a week ago…but i think its slowly working…when i start drawing without thinkin about anything…my drawing sux a loooooooooooooot , but when i see an image in my head of a pose…and focus on that pose it kinda sux a lot less =D

im still shy to post here on cgtalk , but soon will start a sketchbook on the sketchbook forum , im still drawing with pencil on paper since my tablet is not a wacon and i see a lot of difference between drawing on pencil or using the tablet…( maybe because i never learned or forgot how to set pressure sensitivity on photoshop )

today…im planing on stoping trying to draw figures from my head and try to copy some comic references a friend who draw told me it would help me learn how limbs behave in diferent positions , im also reading burne hogart “dynamic figure drawing” its helping me…not as much as i would like , mas then again its because im a begginer…so i understand his concepts but cant execute them very welll…YET.

i woke little inspired to draw today…maybe its an overdose of drawing…i dont know…but i hope it goes away soon.

thanks to everyone who replied here , you all really made my hopes right for the future…its just a little dificult without anyone telling you to face that you need at least one year to draw something that looks “ok”.

im gone now…thank you again and sorry for any errors in my english.

Have you been here : http://the-structure-of-man.blogspot.com/ ?

Its one thing to have an anatomy book, but its totally a thing in itself to actually see a human being drawn from scratch and with details being explained.

That is the single most inspirational comment I’ve read here in a long time! You my good sir have just written my new mantra!

Hey McKertis, you just made me spend $20 bucks ( not counting the shipping ) and I would just like to say at the bottom of my heart…THANK YOU!!, THANK YOU!!, THANK YOU!!,

This is so much better than reading from a book, I’ve always learned better when I see someone actually doing the lessons and showing there techniques as opposed to trying to explain them. thanks again.

I am sincerely flattered. Thank you.

@Rafa-el - Keep plugging and don’t worry about getting burned out. Take a break from it and put it aside. Just don’t let the break go on to long… it takes discipline too

@McKertis - Thank you soooo much for that link, its incredible. :applause:

Lower your expectations. Art is an expression, not a process.

It is, when you create what you were told to create.

Thats not art. Thats craft.
