Stain glass

#1

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to create a stained glass lamp for a pool table using mental ray in Maya 2012.

I’ve been working with a mia_material_x shader with a frosted glass preset as start point but all my results are no good.

I was thinking on experimenting with the sub surface scattering shader so some of the light comes through the lamp while the glass is still opaque.

Is there any better way you can think of to achieve that result?

In this web you can see what kind of lamp I’m talking about or search for ‘pool table lamps’ in google images.

Thank you!

SSS is certainly one way to achieve your look, but has its own inherent issues as well and also will take longer to render, obviously.

For lit glass, I generally use a mia_light_surface (might be mia_surface_light?) in the Additional Color slot, in the Advanced section of the mia_mat_x.

The light_surface shader has controls for basic intensity/color, FG interaction, reflection interaction, and will also allow you to alternatively connect it directly to one or more actual lights. Thus, its intensity can be controlled by your light’s intensity directly for ease-of-use as well as more realism.

If you need more info on this, I’ll post up some pics. Otherwise search the Maya forums and you should see several posts on the topic, with examples and stuff. Hope this helps.
