SSD over-provisioning

#1

I just happened across this topic the other day and not having seen this here, thought I would mention it to those who are also using SSD drives in their systems.

Samsung has built into their latest (4.1) ‘magician’ tool, an easy way to do over-provisioning of your SSD. By simply reserving space for its’ controller (around 10%), the SSD will supposedly have improved performance and a longer life-span.

Some devices may already have this built it, but my Samsung drives did not (840 & 830 series)… so, if you have the extra space on yours… it may be a benefit to look into this.

The lifespan of the drive is directly affected by the used capacity of the drive. Leaving more unused capacity means more cells to utilize for wear leveling which equates to a longer lifespan since the cells have a limited number of write/erase cycles. I don’t think it has any affect on performance though. Thanks for the heads up on the utility!
