Square Topology Question

#1

I have a quick question that’s been causing me a lot of trouble.

Let’s say I model something like a pole. Usually a pole is long and straight. So the side polygons can be long rectangles (left). But if I want to import it to ZBrush to sculpt and subdivide, I need square polygons to divide evenly, so I have to add extra edge loops (right) redundantly to make squares:

Is there a way around this? I always am adding extra edge loops just so the polygons are squares, which makes my polygon count higher and is annoying.

I appreciate any help, thank you all.

I would say getting into the habit of always creating square poly’s is a good habit to have. It’s really a requirement of ZB if you want smooth predictable sculpting results.

if you want some what even square use tool>geometry>Dynamesh
since you have hard edges and you want to keep them then increase the resolution slider to like 256 before you convert to a dynamesh

you could all so try some thing like this

Thanks a lot for the help guys, your suggestions gave me some good ideas of how I’m going to tackle this problem in the future.

zbrush 4 R7 just came out

the image on the left was done by
tool>polygroup>group by normals
then tool geometry>zremesher with keepgroups on,
this will keep the edges hard, took a few seconds to do.

the image on the right was done with zmodeler faces and edge tools
