Sprites?

I was watching the extras dvd for LOTR the other day and saw the part about how they made the balrog. They said they used sprites to achieve the fire on him, I guess like particles in combustion. I was wondering if anyone knew a place where i could learn more about this technique? Any tutorials on making your own particles in combustion? Or even just general information about what they are, how their used…etc… I keep looking on the internet for information, but I think the term sprites refers to something else too.

Actually the sprites they talked about were sprites in alias Maya. Which are 2D cards that they mapped hand painted fire or footage of fire onto. Stick those to the character but let them still react to dynamics - et voila…big, fiery monster :wink:
