Splitting uvw clusters based on angle between polygons?

#1

Hello colleagues!
Does any one know if it’s possible to split uvw clusters based on an angle between polygons?
As making normal maps requires to do so, based on an angle between polys around 35 degrees from my experience. The problem also it doesn’t matter if the angle is obtuse or acute (i.e concave or convex polys angle).

well yes, in UV editor:

select all polys, Mapping>Flatten Mapping>Play with Angle

Thank you for the reply!
I found that for lowpoly modeling the solution might be chcking it with smoothing group angle, and either adding polys there, or cutting clusters later.

Making normal maps does not requires to do that.

Also Automatic Unwraping in Bake to Texture will use Flatten mapping with default 45°. Same angle as Auto Smooth and some others.

Just curious Domos, what your opinion is based on? As I ran some tests, and the angle where the seam appears is approximately 35 degrees.

Well, based on understanding stuff  Dont know what to say on that question.

Best “place for seams” in normal mapping would be on flat surface - 0°.
That’s color 127, 127, 255 - from booth sides of seam.
Or no seams at all.

But in practice there’s no some “angle rule”.

Seams don’t appears.
