Splitting a complicated mesh into separate objects

I apoligize in advance for what is probably a simple question.

I have a complicated model of a human brain which I purchased, however, the two hemispheres are one mesh, and I would like to be able to work with them individually.

Detail does not have to remain completely perfect, I could settle for the inside of each hemisphere as one face that I could slap an image on. I tried selecting one half in vertex mode and colapsing the vertexes, but that warped the image map.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Apply an Editpoly modifier on top. Then select the polygons you want as a separate object. Then click the Detach button.
