Speckled polypaint problem

I’ve modelled this character, but now that i’m trying to texture it the colour keeps coming up speckled, the only time it doesn’t is when i choose white (which just returns to the material’s standard look) I’ve tried using RGB, MRGB and played with a few settings for brushes, just can’t work out what’s going wrong. When i was modelling i thought the skin looked bumpy, but when i smooth it it doesn’t affect it.
it’s the same on all SubDiv levels, the only time it looks like a solid colour is when it is masked…
this is a serious problem as i won’t be able to properly texture this model in polypaint if i can’t get past this.
Attached is a picture of the different colours and textures tried on it and a masked area… hoping that should give someone a clue as what’s gone wrong.

As for the model, it was made in 3dsmax, imported to zbrush… that’s more or less it. and any other file i switch to in zbrush is fine… so i’m assuming it’s something with this model rather than my setup.
