Space Switching Pro and Con

#1

Just wondering what people thought of space switching in general. For example on the head, or arms.

I get the argument that world space means you aren’t counter animating but in my experience I find it easier to get nice looking animations just simply animating in local space. When everything is in world space I struggle to make the body look connected and natural.

Was just wondering what mileage other animators got?

Thats what space switches are for. So there is no discussion about what is better.
“Just put the control in your desired space, shut up and start animating.”

Obviously my post doesnt mean there cant be a discussion about it here, that was just my riggers point of view. There are different preferences among people and its interesting to share experiences.

But I guess it depends a lot on what exactly you are animating. If hands and feet have lots of contact with environment or other static objects, its best to have those controls reside in world space or that other objects local space - again, depending on what it is and does.

If the character is doing lots of crazy moves and such I find it best to keep controls in the fullBody local space, especially if it involves the chracter doing spins and rotation 180++ degrees in arbitrary axes.

In the end it comes all down to experience, preference evolves from that.
