some basic questions

#1

I’ve rendered a lot of scenes, but one problem annoyance that I occasionally run into with figures is that the scene lights don’t match the render at all. Like often I’ll have the scene lights lumens up so bright that the figure will be completely whited out, but the render will still be very dark…so is there a setting I’ve missed?

What software are you using? Are you talking about the preview in your viewport not matching? There are a bunch of things that the viewport won’t preview that could be causing the discepency.

3dsmax 2011. vray and mental ray renderer… I understand that there are some differences…but I have the scene lights turned up so high that it’s impossible to see the figure cause it’s all whited out, and then the render is still too dark. I don’t understand it.

It’s not all the time I have to say. Sometimes it matches pretty close actually. I’m not understanding why it sometimes mismatches and other times it’s pretty close.

It’s annoying because once I actually get the scene bright enough to render, I can’t change the scene anymore cause I can’t see anything.

Do you have some example images you could show us? It’s kinda hard to suggest anything to help without seeing something.

degama your color textures to .4545, set your render gama to 2.2 for test renders, render your final render at a gama of 1. it will be dark again, save render as exr 32 bit, and import to photoshop and set your gama back to 2.2
