Some advice for joining VFX industry

#1

I am almost 31 maybe i am old bastard, but i really have enormous in VFX and becoming 3D Modeler. I am software developer, but working in tech is not my thing. I am more creative person, than logic person.

What drives me to be 3D Modeler is never ending opportunity of creativity and i really want to explore that.

I want to know what is like to work in VFX or maybe in games as 3D Modeler? Is there jobs available? Do i need a degree to be hired? Do i need to go school for this? My only education is Graphic Designer (1 year) and that it.
Does companies hire people from oversees without degree but having strong portfolio?

Oversees? depends on where you are from and where you think you’d like to work.
The path to work from one country to another has been paved for some countries more than others.

Having a proper degree (BA and up-not just a diploma) can help a lot with immigration/Visa issues that is beyond what the portfolio does i.e: the portfolio might get a studio’s interest-but they can only ‘request’ a Visa for you-they cannot ‘issue’ it.

I am from Serbia. Which is NON EU country.
My eye to work is in Canada for the future.

Serbia so not being EU you might wanna stack your bets. As a software developer do you have a degree?
Any degree (BA or higher) can help with the Visas process. But only an studio HR will know how ‘easy’ getting one for Serbia>Canada is.

Meanwhile modelers are fairly common-which means you have more competition than say something more technical. Usually for someone with a software development background I suggest finding a way to use that.
Like maybe as a Technical Artist for games or some such. Or pipeline tool development.

Whatever you love to do you’ll develop the fastest but having a degree might be even more important in your case. You should research Visas to get a better idea.

there’s a four month program offered by https://www.3dtraining.net/ very reasonably priced that for starters can get you certified. I went through the program, currently working on my portfolio and freelancing.
