Thanks for the links, this is quite neat. Face Robot is going to be built in now!?, awesome!
hrm… ice effects can be exported and imported in maya. interesting… not really sure where that would come in handy, but flexibility is always nice. i’m liking the sound of the performance monitor for ice networks. It’ll be fun to finally try out face robot as well.
The performance monitor is nice, but just prettier dressing, ICE debugging was working well before.
The scene debugger on the other hand is big, REALLY big if you do anything performance sensitive like rigging.
What would your “Wishlists” for 2010 look like?
I’d like to see efforts towards faster/realtime rendering. Not so much with just the OpenGl\DX10 viewport shaders but actual close to realtime results with an updated Mental Ray.
Any updates to lighting\rendering\shading tools in Mental Ray are welcome so that it continues to stay competitive with the 3rd party rendering offerings.
Updates to Hair would always be welcome, as would any nifty new polygon modeling tools.
Better tools for working with Curves\Nurbs, or even just Maya’s magnet\draw on surface tool.
One thing that I would really like to have, is a quick button to help unify the scale of UV islands to be relative to the actual scale of the geometry.
Another idea, would be some measurement tools to help determine the required texture size for optimal results with your current UV layouts/output resolution/distance to camera.

No but seriously… looks, sounds and feels like the best XSI (er I mean Softimage) ever… I hope people enjoy it.
Why couldn’t Autodesk make the softimage.com URL point at the Softimage product page on the Autodesk site. Pretty annoying. Now we have to dig through 1000 other tools to get to it.
? www.softimage.com points straight to the Softimage product page on autodesk.com here. What are you seeing?
I was really hoping for significant advancement in ICE with this release. Looking at the docs… I’m honestly unsure what I am reading. Is it now possible to create and destroy geometry? If no, is it possible to build it with this new C++ support? and will we ever see supported kinematics? (something I was really looking forward to considering how much I’ve seen done with the unsupported stuff)
I like how half the new features say “no picture available” over them. Stellar marketing Autodesk.
im quiet dissapointed with the new features, something i got used to from autodesk. FaceRobot is nice, but that wont change my workflow drastically. I think the reason of disappointment is because for the amount of money you pay for every year for upgrades, you would expect more than these UI changes honestly. and that’s Autodesk problem, they develop 10 features, and divide it for 10 years, and each year they pack a dozen useless features into one of them, shame on them.
FaceRobot first priced at 100K back at Avid days, then it became 30K and still didn’t sell as much. it’s not price, it’s how much drastic is it going to change your life?! you have to be aware that in order to use FR you have to have your head sperated from your geometry, with no blending features, FR is meant for games and people who have constant access to Vicon capture systems. how else would you animated all those markers? by hand?! that defeats the point of being fast!
Arghhh, someone should head to SIGGRAPH and slap Autodesk CEO for being a world class jack ***! GigaCore III?! do they think people still believe in these things?! Scene search, group, Autokey Camera?!!! I realy feel insulted!!! every time i say to my self, stop paying these yearly salaries for autodesk because your not getting anything in return, and i fall in the trap again. I guess i know what will Softimage 2011 will be already: GigaCore IIII, Scene Search wildcards, solar powered speedy curve editor all from here to china, because of the ehanced GigaCore IIII powered by brilliant autodesk engineers! PATHETIC.
But then again, looking at the Maya 2010 new features…hmmmm i feel pitty for those Maya Unlimited users, with their yearly contracts, they basically got the finger!!! : ![]()
Cheers
I3D
Are you really complaining that the software got more faster and stable to work with?
no im complaining that this is not a feature, this is their job
if something is broken and i paid for it as if it’s not, i expect them to fix it for Free, not wrap it in a feature and tell me hey man, we made it stable, ohh sorry you don’t have an upgrade contract, hmm, sorry you’ll have to keep using the non stable broken version! faster? how much faster? is it real time? can i scrub a fully envloped character with SubD now without worrying of the amount of expressions and deformers added to it?! isn’t that the same thing we keep hearing everytime there’s an upgrade? faster and more stable! why are bitching then if it’s faster and more stable?! is it worth the 1K for essential or 2K for advanced you keep paying every year?! with the amount of money i paid and everyone else paid, it was supposed to be faster and more stable a long time ago! and if it wasn’t stable and fast before, they should have said so in their brochure the first time they announced the product.
Well, I find it a little anticlimactic too, to be honest.
I was under the impression that when 7 was released, ICE just wasn’t quite there yet in terms of accessing all of XSI, so the first release would feature particles and deformations. and another year of continuing work would be dedicated to ICE so that it could be used fully and in all areas such as the creation of geometry etc.
The fact that this release does not focus on ICE , combined with the rather scarce other new features, makes me think that maybe the continuing hard work put into development still isn’t ready for release.
Maybe ICE needs more time, but they needed to release ‘something’, so Face Robot was thrown in as a sweetener? I’m quite used to that kind of thing, coming from LW.
for me, FR could be quite useful, so I’m not complaining. I was just hoping to see the next
incarnation of ICE.
In fact, you do not have to have your head mesh seperated from your main geometry. You can use Face Robot with the whole character mesh.
You can use both mocap and hand keyframing very easily with Face Robot. It is after all build with the all of the Softimage tech and animation features, so you have access to all of this workflow. Plus you can alter and tweak the rigging, or maybe use Synoptic views to make the rig "easier"to use, if you wish to.
Regarding the previous pricing, I’m not able to really comment, but there are many myths surrounding the pricing of Face Robot. And although was 100K at one point, this was a long time ago now, and has been alot cheaper in recent years. And I’m not sure where you have got 30K from.
I know that performance and speed gain, do not perhaps sound like much, but they are very significant. The performance gains alone that we have experiance, I believe, make this 2010 a strong release. Plus it helps pave the way for future enhancements and possible features.
