Softening/Smoothing edges when rendering?

I’m using vray to render in 3ds, and have come to problem that my curves (original made from a spline) renders out so that you can see each line and plane which make up that curve (see image).

Is there a render option to smooth the render output?

I have tried mesh smoothing the object but it smooths the whole object which messed it up, I just want to smooth that curved bit.

I have also tried just selecting the curved part, detaching it, then meshsmoothing it. this works but gives a wobbly line where it sits next to the original object.

Really I would like to be able keep it one whole object and just smooth specific parts.

I used to use sketchup and it somehow cheats by giving you a soften edges option but doesn’t soften all the hard edges which you want to keep that way.

Apply the smooth modifier to the mesh. Or use the smoothing groups options of editable poly. Also, to derive a smoother spline curve, increase the steps in editable spline.

Ah! yes smooth does it, sorry, I didn’t realise it did that.
