Smoothing curves with: Spline, Auto or Plateau?

#1

Hi guys!

I was wondering why a lot of animators switch from Stepped to Spline (and not to Auto or Plateau) to smooth their curves after blocking?

Both Auto and Plateau give you smooth curves all the same, but without the overshoot that you get from Spline.

I get that there’s just a workflow preference, but it’s hard for me to see the benefit of Spline over the other smooth tangent types. Hope I can be enlightened!

Sometimes maya’s autotangent doesn’t give you smoother interpolation than spline. It eliminates overshoots but you can end up with weird broken tangents as a tradeoff. The autotangent script that lets you adjust how much overshoot to attempt to eliminate provides a bit more control.

Some people don’t like switching to flat because the constant ease in and outs it creates can be distracting when trying to judge your arcs.

Although of course splining has its own downsides as you said.
