Sky Portals Show up as Black Planes

#1

I am currently lighting a scene using a daylight system, photometric lighting, and sky portals. The issue I am getting is that the sky portals are showing up in my renders as black planes, even though i have turn off visible to renderer.
This is also a recent development, when i first added them this wasn’t an issues.
I did have a window in place with a MR glass texture applied to it, but i get the issues whether that object is hidden or not.

Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Hi Brenden,
you have not mentioned it, but I am guessing your using maya?
Where did you turn off visible to render?Cause I think there is more then one place where you can turn it off.

Hi Copain,
I’m actually using 3ds Max 2012. I read a different thread that said it might be the Mental Ray Glass Material, and it turns out that it actually was. After I hid the objects with the MR material the problem went away.
From what I understand it had to do with the sky portal being to close to a reflective surface.

Yes, place your portals outside (behind) your window panes, and also be sure they’re visible in reflections and refractions of course. And be sure your Raytrace depth levels are turned up high enough to accommodate the multiple surfaces…

I use portal lights in all my work, and also render with window glass. Works fine, just a little tricky at first! Also Maya’s slightly different than Max, may be a few things there I don’t know about.
