Skinning is not working [help]

#1

Hi
I used to work with 3d max and I’m changing to Maya. So I was watching some online tutorials to learn how to rig a character and I’m having some trouble with the Skinning part.
I’ve watched different tutorials to make sure that I didn’t miss anything and that it works the same with everybody.
I did like this: Selected the mesh, selected the Skeleton root, clicked on Smooth Bind.
The character should move even before I correct the skin weights, right? But it doesn’t move a thing!
It allows me to paint the skin weight, but it still doesn’t move.
Can anybody help me? I have no idea what is going on.
Thanks

Hi!

Frustrating problem.
Can you post a screenshot of your viewport and outliner and I will take a look.

I have no idea what happened here, but I fixed yesterday.
If anyone else is having this problem, what I did was export the mesh, but not saving anything(history, material,
), and then imported it again. Problem solved

If anyone can tell me why this happened I’d appreciate it!

maybe your skin cluster was set to 0 or the SC node was set to something different than “normal” or you had a blendshape going after the skin. So many things can go wrong with maya, it keeps you awake!

ur doing it backwards thats why select joints then mesh

yes, selection order is very important. pay attention to the little maya help field in the bottom left corner of the maya window … hover your mouse over the smooth bind command (but don’t click it). that’s a habit that i got into a long time ago. that little help line does a pretty good job of giving the specific directions for the tools.

first pick the joints, and then the mesh, and then click the smooth bind command. be sure to use the “use selected joints” option in the smooth bind option window. picking the root, and using the “joint hierarchy” binding method is wrong. you have the control available to you, so use it! first pick only the joints you know you’ll need to bind to, then the mesh. you’ll be happier if you do it that way. its a tad more work, but worth it.

I was following the order that I saw on the tutorial.
But I tried to do it the other way around to see if it would work before posting it here. But it didn’t. =S

If I had to choose between following the directions in a tutorial (written by someone who may have never written a tutorial before, or by someone who may inherently be a terrible communicator), or to follow the directions given directly from the software in which you are trying to accomplish the needed task … well, I’d follow the instructions given by the software.

That’s just me though. People get things wrong all the time. But if Maya has a method for telling you how to use one of its own tools properly, then I’d think that it would know what its talking about.
