Skinning and weights

#1

Hi,

I’m using the skin modifier on my model, and I’m having trouble with weight painting.
I’m trying to understand how the paint weights tool works. In maya, you have the “Add”, “Smooth” , and “Replace” operations on the brush.
Here in Max, I have one bone, that I want pulling some vertices from where another bone is, so I’ve got the “paint blend weights” option checked. What’s really weird to me, are these little white areas, that seem like they’re just dead weights. I can’t tell where the influence is coming from, and more importantly, I don’t know how to paint over them.
I also ran into another problem mirroring the weights. It doesn’t seem to be copying the weights to the right places. What I’m doing is this.
I turn on the mirror mode, a plane appears cutting through my model like I want.
I select the paste green bones to blue bones, and then paste green to blue vertices.
I’ve fiddled with the offset (I don’t see why I want to move the plane off 0 ),
and I’ve turned the threshold up, way up. But nothing happens.
Could anyone give me some advice as to what I’m doing wrong?
Thanks in advance

For the white areas, I guess I got around it by adjusting the weights manually, with the weight tool (wrench).

As for the Mirroring, I understand how it works, and I’m pretty sure it’s a bug.
What’s going on, is that my envelopes for some reason are way off center, way to the side of my model.
How do I bring them Back?

Thanks
