I’m extremely new to any kind of artistic endeavor, but lately I’ve had an increased interest in drawing, both on paper and with an electronic medium. Right now I’m focusing on sketching the human form and getting to know basic human anatomy. This brings me to my two main questions:
-
My first question: I’m looking for a good book on drawing the human anatomy. The book doesn’t necessarily need to be a drawing book but I’m looking for someting that will help me get a grasp on the human form in general. Any suggestions?
-
And, my primary question: When doing a preliminary sketch of a character during the layout of the overall scene, or when you first begin a piece with a character as the primary subject, what are the first few things you focus on where the human figure is concerned? In what order do you approach sketching the human subject or what method do you use, if any?
For example, I’ve seen some drawing/sketching books recommend that you begin drawing you character by starting with a basic stick figure in order to establish the desired pose, then identify the locations of all the joints (usually designated by circles in the sketch) before concentrating on the overall outline of the human shape. This would continue with adding physical detail, adding more volume, etc.
As far as sketching the human form goes, is this step-by-step approach the most common? (total newbie here)
Thanks.
