Sketchbook Thread of Zane Parker

#1

So, here goes my first set of postings. I am very glad I found the CG Society website and found this forum becasue it helps me keep my practice up. Or at least I’m hoping it will. I’m hoping it will be a healthy place to keep moving forward since I’ve been pretty much on an unproductive track with my own personal art and figurative work. See, after graduation I think a lot of us artists/illustrators stop practicing becasue of our professional lives. Having to please a client all the time becomes a drag after awhile and just seems to take the “creative wind” right of the sails you know?

So, it’s been around 10 years since college and I haven’t been able to keep up my study of the human figure, one of my most favorite subjects. It’s hard to do when you leave the classroom environment and you no longer have access to models for 3-6 hours every week. And working from photos sometimes isn’t as fun as working from life.

But anyway, I’ll stop rambing on and start posting some work. I hope those of you who vist enjoy the work. By the way feel free to offer any constructive crits you may have.

This is my first set of sketches posting so please forgive me if it’s a bit small. I’ll redo if it is. Anyway, these sketches were done very quickly the day before yesterday. My gestures sketches are usually anywhere from under a minute to three minutes.

Hi all! Thanks for visiting.

These are a series of longer studies done a few months ago. The first was around 2 or 3 hours, the second and third are more like 30 minutes to an hour.

The postings in my sketchbook so far are traditional but I do work digitally as well. As far as sketching and the drawing though things tend to go more traditional. I haven’t done any finished stuff for my portfolio on here but all my professional work is digital. I’m getting into doing hybrids but after seeing what Linda Berkavist is doing. Holy crap  !!! She’s so damn awesome, I may have to start drawing the base digitally. Love ya Linda! Your truely an inspiration.

Zane,

Welcome aboard! Nice to see your work here, glad you decided to start a thread.

I really encourage you to join the ongoing Workshop:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198&page=1&pp=15

You are welcome to post work for the Workshop both to the Workshop thread and to your own Personal Sketchbook Thread.

To be notified of replies to your or any thread, simply left click “Thread Tools” > “Subscribe to Thread” and you will be notified by email of replies.

As well I invite you to jump into the community by posting comments and constructive critique to others’ threads, and they will post comments in return. I look forward to seeing more of your work here!

The best way to host images is through a free image host such as www.imageshack.us. I wrote a tutorial for hosting / posting images here:
New to CGTalk? Learn how to post IMAGES here!
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=267088

Which uses the example image host Photobucket - however, that image host does not allow nude images to be hosted, so I recommend imageshack instead.

Cheers,

Hey!

Great work here, I love to see the traditional works of digital artists, it gives a better insight into formal training and how they got started as artists!

Your drawings are beautiful, keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing some of your digital works as well.

Rebecca,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I read about the torso workshop and was wondering if that’s for the month of September or October. I’m planning on participating. Although, it seems like a miracle if I can get time to myself with everything going on in my life right now. LOL

But, I’m really excited about this forum and the work I’ve seen is great! Your stuff is wonderful. I enjoy looking thorugh it. Is the majority of your stuff traditionally done? I was wondering if you found it better to scan your work into a scanner or to take digital photos? It’s hard for me to scan sometimes becasue I like to work at a good size. Larger than my scanning bed anyway. How large do you work your sketches or master copies at?

I really like the quality of your marks that you make. The master copies in your portfolio are really nice. The muslce details and the rendering of the shadows is very nice nice to look at. There’s alot of detail there.

Best Regards,
Zane

Mynti,

Wow! I fellow Philly person. Very cool! Thanks for the nice complements. I looked at your portfolio and WOW! Nice stuff. I was really surprised at the piece you did that was your first try with a WACOM. That piece is awesome!!! What do you feel took you the longest? Was it the evening out of the flesh tones and getting them that smooth? Did you sketch it out in the computer or use a scanned sketch? I like to find out how others work as well.

The light sources and mood in your “Escape” piece is nice also.

Kepp up the good work! Looking forward to seeing more as well.

Cheers,
Zane

One day my girlfriend and I sat down to watch a movie and while we did that I saw it as a good time to get a sketch in. So I grabbed my sketch book and this was the outcome.

Zane, you’re welcome! And thank you for the kind comments.

I really do hope you have time to participate in the Torsos Workshop. Don’t worry too much about the ‘deadline’ as effectively these Workshops remain open ad infinitum. Having said that, the most activity will occur there during the official Workshop dates.

Friday, September 15, - Saturday, October 14, 2006

Feel free to tailor the Workshop to your schedule / needs. It would be better to do a few really nicely done torso drawings than none at all due to worry about an artificial deadline.

You should definitely check out this thread:

Some wonderful pencil drawings from a very humble artist.

Hiya Zane!

Hah, thank you very much!

What took me the longest was yes, smoothing out the skin. Since then I’ve gotten much faster with that sort of work, especially in all my newer pieces (I suppose I should post more to my sketchbook, hey?)

How I work is usually I’ll sketch on paper first, just to get a rough idea, and then I’ll sketch again digitally. I rarely scan stuff in, just 'cause I can’t be bothered to dig my scanner out and use it! Haha. Then I usually start blobbing in colors and get more refined as the process goes on. You can see some process animations in my sketchbook for a better idea of how I start off a digital painting.

Look forward to seeing your next work!

Hugs,
Gracie

Thanks for the link Rebecca! I’d love to take a look at it but it seems as though Photobucket has deleted all of the images and thunbnails from the servers or something. I’ll keep looking around and see if I can’t find anything. Maybe I can go to Icey’s website or something. Hopefully the work is posted there as well.

I hope to have some torso work up soon. I started a drawing in my sketch book a few days ago but it SUCKED! I’m taking a few days off from work. I need a “Mental Health” day you know? And I plan on working on some stuff then.

Best regards,
Zane
