Sketchbook Thread of Woody

One quick digital for today…

#22

Hi Woody,

One thing I would suggest for your new piece is to draw on a layer above your other layers the outline of the skull and neck, minus the hair, so that you can more clearly define their relationship to the body. I think what is happening right now is that the head is just a bit small, and at an angle that looks a little unnatural ~ adding hair should likely be a last touch. Also, I recommend adding a layer of medium opacity dark gray to your entire image and working up your lights gradually from there.

Looking forward to your progress!

Cheers,

Hi Woody,

Good to see more work!

I think there are some basic things off with this ~ it might help also to post (if you can) the reference which you are using.

Mainly I think she needs more skull mass. Also, the line from her nose to lips to chin is probably more angled back toward the neck than it is currently. With the eyes, I recommend creating a more rounded shape to them, even in the profile view ~ vs. the slightly collapsed < shape it has currently. Also, always draw the shape of the skull first before adding hair ~ hair can be really deceptive and throw off the general shape of the head if that is not sketched in first.

Cheers,

Hi all

Here is the update on that sketch I was working on…

Woody

#29

Good Job on last updated piece:thumbsup:

#30

Woody,

Nice update. One thing I would recommend is aligning the axis of the shoulders ~ her right shoulder seems significantly lower then her left. Also I think the hairline should start at the back of her neck, instead of a bit indented on the side. The lips seem a bit small, and I would suggest refining the nostril a bit. Ultimately, of course, you want to remove the outlining of the features / face and replace that with shading.

Nice progress ~ looking forward to your next update!

Cheers,

~Rebecca

Hey Woody, good to see you back! Very happy to hear that you are taking traditional classes, I think that’s fantastic. Take a look at the Florence Academy of Art site, there are wonderful studies by the students there that are really inspirational. The volume you are getting in these is great - I think that you should try to push the finesse of them more. I am unfamiliar with using vine charcoal or the type of charcoal that the ateliers use, but I think that you should try to really push the rendering of the drawings once you’ve established the volume. Take a look at some of the work here:

and also from the Angel Academy of Art:

Looking forward to seeing more!

Hi…Woody…

Great to see your works from your class…back to basics…can never go wrong doing that. …I just started a figure drawing class myself…back to basics for me also…great fun… I am really enjoying it… Learning a lot of things that I missed the first time around…:scream:
Really looking forward to seeing more of your work and progress…
Some hard compressed charcoal, in combination with the soft vine charcoal might creat a nice effect on those bust and head studies…just a thought…that might be of help to you in taking your studies further
TAKE CARE
